Thanks for the update Royal Blue. I personally feel as if this project could be a ground breaker or key for further development in that Bordeseley street / Fazeley street area where there are still many unused and unloved warehouses with great potential facades.
So mush potential in Digbeth , if renovated properly it could rival something like the meatpacking district in NYC.

Good stuff!

thanks for posting the only update so far

With a swimming pool it will certainly be in demand from trivago etc. bookers looking for a hotel, we do lack them!

This site is confusing as that extension was definitely underway before we even heard of the proposal or the application went it.

I can't quite believe that Digbeth is getting a 4 star hotel and banqueting suite - surely this would be one of the last steps in the area's regeneration, not the first?! Imagine a wealthy Chinese businessman, booked into the hotel after seeing all the luxurious photos of wealthy people sitting around a pool, and then stepping out of his taxi and seeing... Bordesley Street.

Still, it sets the tone of what should come afterwards! If my memory serves me right, the grand blue brick building opposite is also empty? Luxury apartments would be the perfect compliment :)

I just noticed - the brick extension snapped by Royal Blue should be the new entrance on Oxford Street, corresponding to the first render posted by Sefton. The new facade matches the old architecture facing Bordesley Street. But the two photos don't quite match up? The extension should reach the pavement.

^^ It's being demolished isn't it? It's on the link Ell posted from May last year, a while before this was announced.
I would think so but it has grown in height even from when they submitted the application as there is a photo of the extension above on the cover of the Design and Access Statement.

it is confirmed that this is not under constructions and that side extension will need demolition or alteration... last page of the Design and Access statement details this.

Some roads in digbeth were closed off this afternoon, I happened to get diverted past this site, so got a quick snap, showing work has infact begun.
My friend was involved in a car crash and broke her ribs, chipped her teeth and suffered a broken arm and leg, same with her nan, however her 3 year-old son was relatively unscathed, all because of a German guy going 66 mph down a side road, hence the diversions

Back to the topic :)

Whoa! No that's NOT cool. Good to read they are alive if a little battered but that is NOT good. I hope they make efforts to ensure they throw the book at him.

So many blind corners in Digbeth, you really do have to edge your car out so much just to see past the buildings.

I haven't really taken notice of this scheme and just really looked in to, what a fantastic investment for Birmingham, the first Serena Hotel in the country, and it's in Digbeth too! This will be great with the tram passing very close too!

If it lasts that long lol. Im sure it will though, there is enough business to keep the hotel here.

^^ the swimming pool will be a big draw in my opinion, the hotels with swimming pools are hard to get a room in!

It's also got conference and banqueting space which will be popular and a good income generator

If GBSLEP get their act together this year we could see a brand new television studio built in this area. The studios could really boost this part of Digbeth and help support the new hotel and the Custard Factory:)

Existing Local Growth Fund bids for 15/16:

The creation of a £15m new TV & Digital media production facility, Digbeth Digital Studios will encourage increased commissioning and production in the region, creating a home for what has become an itinerant workforce of Midlands based TV professionals following the closure of facilities and commissioning by the BBC and ITV. On the back of the BBC’s announcement that Birmingham will become its centre of excellence for digital media, this development will further solidify the infrastructure to support the growth of talent in our region.
