This past weekend we finally made it to Lake George in upstate NY. I just love it there - the water is clean, there are lots of fish, and huge history from French Indian wars. Lost of small towns with cozy houses all around the lake. Lost of wild animals - bears included roaming around.

History of the place is quite unique. English built a military fort from logs on the south bank of the lake to cover the main road south towards Albany and NYC. in 1757 it was attacked by the french under the command of the Marquis de Montcalm. He took it after short siege. But he has very little force to continue his drive south so he turned around and went up north to fort Ticonderoga which is much more well built and powerful. English used this respite to gather the forces and start push de Montcalm north. After beating off a three month siege by the English de Montcalm abandoned his quest of NY and went to Quebec where he was killed the following year in a final battle of the war.

I tried pillory myself. It is quite devious design for torture. since it is quite high - you cannot stand on your knees. but it is also quite low to get yourself straight up. so you are forced to stand bended over for days until release. only two minutes into the device - I had a back pain. Now just try to imagine staying there for an hour? :bash:

Nice pictures. I have a friend that goes up there to vacation and he loves it. It looks pretty nice, and some of those buildings are great.

One thing to correct: Last of the Mohicans, the actual book at least, is not set at Lake George. It's actually set in the Cooperstown area, and Glimmerglass Lake is supposed to be Lake Otsego. Cooperstown (on Lake Otsego) is actually named for James Fenimore Cooper's father, and James Fenimore grew up in the Cooperstown area.

well but in the movie (book probably implies this as well) the fort that is being taken is the one I showed above. :) I used to like all three books from Fenimore Cooper about French Indian wars - I was still a kid when I read them.
I will post fort Ticonderoga pictures later today - I made a trip there as well -it is mere 28 miles away.

...The story is set in the British province of New York during the French and Indian War, and concerns--in part--a Huron massacre (with passive French acquiescence) of between 500 to 1,500 Anglo-American troops, who had honorably surrendered at Fort William Henry, plus some women and servants; the kidnapping of two sisters, daughters of the British commander; and their rescue by the last two Mohicans, and others. Parts of the story may have been derived from the capture and death of Jane McCrea in July 1777 near Fort Edward, New York, by members of an Algonquian tribe....

Great fotos

My Mom was from Mohawk Valley between Rome and Oneida but my Pop was Boston so we always went to Cape Cod in summer...was not so expensive back then. Last 2 out of 3 years though I have been up to Adirondacks and come down from Saranac along Lake Champlain and Lake George. Saw Ticonderoga and other places...love it so much...more than Hatteras Island which is also great. Only place I have been like Adirondacks is Sierra Nevada Mountains east of the Sacremento, Ca area. It too is gorgeous...more grand than Adirondacks but not as scenic. Lake George kind of overdeveloped compared to Champlain but still great. I live north of DC. Sucks here. Too much traffic, crime, too pricey, people status-oriented etc...like the north Jersey I grew up in. It was not always like this down here but it is now. I want to live in Adirondacks 5 mos a year and El Salvador 7 months a year (wife from El Salvador). Guess which months I want to live in Adirondacks?....Right! I am supposed to go back this Sunday for a week...hope I make it. Wife does not want to go. She yelled at me for mistreating this woman I almost had an affair with (which she found out about because after I backed out the woman called my wife). So I sent an apology note to this woman and she called my wife again.re all women so revenge minded and vindictive? I love my wife but right now she is reafdy to divorce me. I will pray about it...cannot do much else without looking phony.

Great fotos..I have got to go to William Henry. Terrible the way they surround it with parking lot etc...did that at Ticonderoga as well Don't they realize our forbears shed their blood there?
