Clean Vastrapur lake

AMC awards `30L contract to an agency for project

Source

Ahmedabad: It may not be long before you walk along a cleaner Vastrapur lake. The work for mechanised and manual cleaning of the lake has been allotted to an agency, the proposal for which was approved during the civic body’s standing committee meeting on Thursday.

To keep the water bodies of the city clean, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has also approved the purchase of ‘floating trash skimmer’ and waste removal machine with weed cutting arrangement. The machine will cost the civic body Rs3.06 crore.

Elaborating on it, chairman of standing committee Bhupendra Patel said, “We witness lot of weeds and green dirt floating on the surface of water bodies. Hence, we decided to purchase this machine.” The machine will be able to clean the Sabarmati river as well as various major lakes like Vastrapur and Kankaria among others.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress raised objection to allotment of the contract for cleaning of Vastrapur lake to an outside agency. According to opposition members, the ruling party should train its staff to carry out the work, instead of paying such high price to the contractor. “This seems to be a way to benefit favoured contractors,” said one of the members of the opposition party.

The committee also approved the ‘Urgent proposal’ to allow mayor Meenakshi Patel to visit Berlin, Germany for a presentation on ‘Berlin High Dialogue on Implementing Roi20 decisions on sustainable cities and transport’. During the three-day dialogue organised by United Nations Center for Regional Development, Patel will speak on various projects adopted by AMC for sustainability and BRTS.

Boomerang rollercoaster coming to Kankaria this year

Source

Ahmedabad: Prepare for a thrilling rollercoaster ride at Kankaria in December this year.South Asias first boomerang roller coaster by Vekoma will thrill citizens in the city at the new Balvatika in Kankaria by the end of this year.

The roller coaster is said to achieve speeds of up to 105.6 km/h.The ride begins when the train slowly reverses out of the small station and up a particular vertical lift, pulled by a catch car.Once the car reaches the top of the lift, with riders facing straight down, and the legs dangling in the air,the train is released. It thens zoom through the station heading straight into a tall Bomerang. The design of the Boomerang is kept secret as it will produce a lot of shrieks, says a senior AMC official.

The rollercoaster is being installed by Amrapali industries, which is one among the two agencies that will set up rides at Balvatika. After twisting through the Bomerang, riders will go through a trail which crosses over the station and hit the second vertical incline.A catch car there pulls the train up the second vertical elevation, this time with riders facing the sky. After the train reaches the top of the tower,it is released to cycle backward through the layout. The train then goes through the station and heads up the first vertical lift again.

Apart from these rides there are other interesting amusement rides being developed in Balvatika. These include:

  1. Discovery
  2. Maverick
  3. Vertical Swing
  4. Ring of Fire
  5. Carousel
  6. Mega Disc O
  7. Tower Ride
  8. Sky Fly
  9. Paintball

Kids will love the paintball as it involves forming teams and shooting down opponents using a paint ball gun, says the AMC official.

IDEAL SPACE FOR CITIZENS TO SPEND TIME IN

The garden is spread across a large area and is a good place for citizens to visit and spend time at.The garden will also have a food court.Majority space on the riverfront will be used as spaces for gardening and creating green patches - the garden is a part of the green projects plan, said Municipal Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.

Reminded Le Corbusier of Acropolis

Source

Ahmedabad : You dont need to travel to the Acropolis. You have everything here. This was the reaction of legendary architect Le Corbusier after he visited Sarkhej Roza in 1951.Ahmedabads foremost architect, professor B V Doshi, who worked with Le Corbusier said,It was the greatest tribute to the Sarkhej Roza. The Acropolis in Athens is considered a high point of the Greek civilization. The Roza is a perfect blend of the principles of Islamic aesthetics and a touch of local Gujarati craftsmanship.Navalram Pandya,19 th century poet said : It is difficult to describe the beauty of Sarkhej, even modern engineering seems small before the true beauty of this structure.

Sir John Hubert Marshall (1876-1958 ),who was responsible for excavations that led to the discovery of Harappa and Mohenjodaro sites had said of the Roza : Its beauty is due to its chaste simplicity and classic restraint : and indeed considered on its merit as a pillared hall,it is difficult to imagine how it could have been improved upon.

G W Forrest (1876-1958 ),Former Director of Records,Government of India,in his book Cities of India, published in 1903 says : The southern face of the quadrangle overlooks the great lake which Mehmud Begada excavated and surrounded with gigantic flights of steps and built on its border a splendid palace and harem. In a handsome tomb enclosed like the sepulchre of a saint, with well wrought trellis work, like Begada and his sons.

This mosque is the perfection of elegant simplicity, and is an improvement on the plan of the Jami Masjid.Except the Moti Masjid in Agra there is no mosque in India more remarkable for its simple elegance, said James Fergusson (1808-1886 ),a well-known writer and architect.

Makarba lake water gave tank new lease of life

Source

The Rs 9 crore the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) spent on stormwater drainage lines in Sarkhej has proved well-spent.The recent good rains in the city have rejuvenated Sarkhej Roza, with water overflowing from the Makarba (Singhoda) lake. The ancient tanks rejuvenation began with the civic body preparing a detailed report.

This was to ensure that the Roza which would remain dry though the year got its share of rainwater.AMC city engineer Tarun Lad said,The Roza receives water not only through AMCs storm drainage pipelines but also through natural gates which channel water from Makarba lake.AMC laid underground pipelines of 1,600 mm and 900 mm diameters to take rainwater from Makarba village and Shrinandnagar in Vejalpur into the tank. The Roza has natural gates, which open up only when water from the lake reaches it.This year, because of heavy rains in the city,Makarba Lake had good inflows and overflowed. This water was diverted to the Roza.

Lad further said that AMC had also laid stormwater drainage in Sarkhej. These stormwater drains have an opening in Sarkhej Roza and another one in the Sabarmati. When required, water can be channeled to the Roza,or can be diverted to the river, he said.Abrar Ali Saiyed, president of Sarkhej Roza committee, said,The water is coming in through Shinghoda lake which is just behind the main mosque.

We cleared the inlet of obstacles on Saturday and the water started entering the Ahmed-sar tank.It is only because of the excessive rains that water could come in,as Singhoda lake is very deep.If AMC makes a check dam at the inlet,I believe the lake will not go dry. There are already two parallel drainage lines running towards Sarkhej Roza one is the storm drainage line and other is a pipeline parallel to the railway tracks.

With Old Drainage Channels Restored,Sarkhej Rozas Central Tank Brims Over

Source

Ahmedabad : On Sunday, people from all the parts of the city made a beeline for Sarkhej Roza. The draw was the seemingly miraculous sight of the Ahmed-sar tank previously used as a cricket ground by local kids brimming with water.

For the last seven years, there was no water in the Ahmed-sar tank beside the mosque at the Sarkhej Roza complex. With Ramzan going on,residents from nearby are jubilant at this rehydration. While kids are thronging the tank for a splash and a dip, adults are taking in the complexs beauty in its new, complete sense.

The Times of India,Ahmedabad had begun a campaign for better quality development around the Roza three years ago to support Ahmedabads bid to become Indias first Unesco World Heritage City.A round-table of eminent citizens, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC),and directors of prominent educational institutes was organized.A total of Rs 6.84 crore worth of projects aimed at reviving the roza were sanctioned by AMC.

By the grace of God,we are lucky this happened in the month of Ramzan. It is nothing less than a miracle, said Abrar Ali Saiyed,President of the Sarkhej Roza Committee. He added,We are jubilant as the tank will attract more
visitors to the Roza.Already on Sunday, there was a huge crowd.

Sarkhej Roza is considered the womb of Ahmedabad as it is dedicated to sufi saint Sheikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh. The saint had advised Sultan Ahmed Shah to establish a city on the Sabarmati banks more than 600 years ago.The Roza was built at the cost of nine lakh tankas the local currency then.Rainwater from surrounding areas had stopped draining into the tank as residential colonies and shopping complexes spawned all around in 2007,blocking the natural flow of the water into the tank.

Earlier, the tank would easily fill up with water naturally but this had stopped seven years ago.Now the water is back, and the sight is astounding, said Samat Khan Pathan, secretary of the Sarkhej Roza committee.

Residents of areas around the Roza and people from all over the city are visiting to see the magnificent complex complete with a tank full of water. The complex had become a venue for Qawwali concerts and a filming location from the lack of water.

In October last year, the Roza was one of the locations for the filming of the Rishi Kapoor,Arjun Rampal and Irrfan Khan starrer D-D ay,which will release on Friday. The location was meant to portray Karachi.I was in the twelfth standard when I last saw the tank with water. Its so fulfilling to see the roza back to original glory, said Babloo Khan, who had brought along his wife and two-year-old son.

Azam Khan and his brother Muazzam Khan are believed to have been the main architects of the Sarkhej Roza complex. The tank was conceptualized on the theme of the Earths Eye,looking into which God measured the depth of his own creation.Crocodiles once rippled through the tanks waters.
