Wattay airport extension underway

The improvements at Wattay International Airport are progressing as planned and are set to be completed before the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit to be held in Vientiane in November.

Funded by grant aid from the government of Japan and a low interest loan from the government of China, the improvements will enable the airport to accommodate more Boeing 747, 737 and Airbus 320 aircraft.

Wattay International Airport is being enlarged ahead of the ASEM Summit in November.

Parking space at the airport will be extended to accommodate more than 40 large planes, which will be needed to bring in delegates to the summit.

The Japanese government has provided 1,225 million yen (more than US$16.17 million) for the upgrade. The project is now 5.8 percent complete after work began last month.

The work includes expanding aircraft parking, installing more lighting, buying fire trucks, installing drainage, and buying security equipment and other items.

The project began with ground leveling, which must be done before the onset of the rainy season. The entire operation is scheduled for completion in October.

Other improvements are being financed by a US$37.6 million low interest loan from China. These are now 20 percent complete and should be finished in July. The summit takes place from November 5-6.

The two airport improvement projects form part of the government's policy to transform Laos from a landlocked country to a regional link, by upgrading the airport to international standards.

This will inspire more confidence among tourists coming to Laos and will ensure Laos is better linked with the rest of the region and the world.

The ASEM Summit is the largest event ever to be held in Laos, at which 48 heads of state and government will be present. Topics of discussion will cover areas ranging from politics to economics and culture.

The government believes that holding a successful summit will further raise the reputation and profile of Laos on the international arena and is preparing various facilities to accommodate the event.

These include building 50 villas where visiting heads of state and government will stay, the Lao International Convention Centre, roads, and other infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the European Union is assisting Laos by supporting senior officials to travel to Europe to learn how previous summits have been organised, and for media training.

In response for the demand for the the High denomination, the regular issue of 100000 Kip has come up - to be issued on 1 Feb 2012.

Lao central bank to issue new 100,000-kip notes
Nation Breaking News - January 26, 2012 1:17 pm
Vientiane - The central bank of Laos will next month issue new 100,000-kip (12-dollar) banknotes to encourage people to use the national currency instead of US dollars and Thai baht, news reports said Thursday.

"With 100,000-kip banknotes, people won’t need to carry so many notes around with them to pay for goods and services," Currency Issuing Department Director General Souphat Khotnhotha told the Vientiane Times.

At present, many Lao prefer to use US dollars and Thai baht for expensive purchases because they are available in larger denominations, he Currently the largest kip banknote is the 50,000-kip while the largest Thai banknote is 1,000 baht (32 dollars).

Souphat said the introduction of the 100,000-kip note would not increase the money supply, so it should not boost inflation.

He said that the new notes would stop traders hiking prices in the kip currency because of shortages of banknotes.

Central Bank officials blame the kip shortage on the Lao tradition of Buddhist merit-making ceremonies, which includes providing many small-denomination kip banknotes to monks.

The new 100,000-kip banknotes will be printed abroad to ensure against counterfeits, the state news report said.//DPA

The New Railway Bridge in parallel with the existing Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai has the place designated to 30 meter downstream form the existing Friendship Bridge - very closed to the concrete fence of Wat Chommanee.

This railway Bridge will have three rails (mixed gauge) - the first 2 is for meter gauge and the 3rd rail is for standard gauge for High Speed Train from China to go.

Even though Lao government is going to allow the 9 km extension from Tha Nalaeng station to downtown Viengchan in Xay Xettha district, the first priority is to set up the new logistic center 500 meter from the end of the line ... with container yard to allow cargo trains from Thailand to load and unload containers to Laem Chabang or so ... just similar to Cargo 781/782 (Bangsue - Padang besar)

But not yet to expand into Thailand ./.. According to Banking Law of 2008, foreign Banks can open up its offices up to 5 branches + Head Office in BKK. Hope that, the max limit will be increased to 20 branches - unless the foreign banks has taken over the local banks just the case of Thanachart Bank ...

I am surprised with HSBC, from my understanding they only have one branch in Bangkok
Nowadays, HSBC (Hongkong Shanghai Bank Corp.) is focusing on the corporate customers (wholesale banking) - no more retailers as it has been proven that even after they have set up the branch office at Thong Lor, it does not improve the prospect on the retail banking business (personal loans, personal bank accounts, private banking and credit cards), so the retail banking of HSBC is now going to be transfer to Bank of Ayutthaya and subsidiaries which has 588 branches to serve Thai customers nationwide.

However, the process will be done after 31 December 2012. At the time being, Thong Lor Branch shut down on 31 march 2012 while HSBC Head Officer at Rama 4 will be shut down for retailers on 30 June 2012.
