Laos expects to launch its first satellite before the end of 2015, an official of the post and telecommunications ministry told Vientiane Times this week.
Lao Sat 1 is expected to be launched into an orbital location owned by Laos at a longitude of 128.5 degrees east.
The satellite will provide 22 transponders for television and telephone channels.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week to mark the beginning of construction of a ground station in Vientiane, which will be used to communicate with the satellite.
The project, which is reported to cost more than US$250 million, is being funded by a loan from the Chinese government.
