CRA Approves Plans for Housing On Top of Strip Mall

The Community Redevelopment Agency last Thursday approved plans to construct a 136-condominium project above an existing strip mall south of the Fashion District. Called CityFront Place, the project by developer Dennis Needleman would place five levels of housing on top of the single-level commercial building at 530 E. Washington Blvd. The project would actually be five separate buildings and would feature one- to three-bedroom units ranging from 877 to 1,488 square feet, along with a landscaped courtyard, tennis courts and pool. A separate six-story parking garage would house 669 vehicles. Designed by Alhambra-based The Architech Group, it is slated to open in November 2007.

How many times have I thought to myself, 'if their was just some way for them to add housing atop just half of the hundreds if not thousands of strip malls in LA proper, it would make a big difference.' I didn't realize that this was even structurally a sound idea. And now I read this article that let's me know it can be done! Now I'm longing to see I'm sure, soon to be ads of luxury condos atop a 7-11 and $1 Chinese food.
^ I'm with you on that one. Especially that Vermont, Western have too many tacky strip malls with 3 compact parking spaces. Gee, let's get rid of those right away.
Well, the article was not about getting rid of them, but making them more useful by allowing mixed-zoning.
i love the 4 story outdoor malls on vally blvd in alhambra... slap some condos ontop of that and they could be highrises!
any renderings for this one?
No. Number 1 is still the grocery cart wheeling panhandlers.

^ That was just my idea since they don't offered enough spacious parking spots. Also where are the new residence going to park. In those dangerous alley behind these tacky strip malls????
i beleive the zoning laws were recently changed and Hopefuly the most endangered species in LA will be the STRIP MALL. RIP you bastards. seriously though, there is so so so much potential with these wasted spaces and i beleive that the densification and added residential components to strip malls will change all of LA proper. I cant really remember the last new strip mall ive seen built, at least in the L shaped with parking in front tacky store kind. Thank God.
I don't know why, but I find it very urban that a building has a stip mall in the bottom floor, and the upper floors are apartments. It's like those nice but old apartment buildings in SoHo and Greenwich Villige.

Of course you nutshell! They'll park in the back alley and be all frightened that they might get mugged and live out their secret wanton need of the urban experience. And if they are hardcore urban wannabee's, they'll probably not even own a car, making their lives all the more glamorously dangerous. "As she walks down those cobble stoned streets at night in her stilletos. Only hearing the sound of scurrying rats and the occasional cough and choke of bums flanking her path like old discarded newspaper. "
Geez! I thought you would catch on to this by now "Ferney". You talk as if you live in Westchester or something.
^ OMG, that is such a low blow. I guess I need to be more "Urban" and move to Silverlake to catch on........lol!
^^ ha ha ha... silver lake, oh my
