i got back from my second las vegas trip last wednesday. here are some pictures. for pictures from my plane ride back, you can see my thread about identifying the western united states.

we stayed at the sahara again, and this was the view from our room. we had a perfect view of the stratosphere and of downtown.

looking south down the strip from turnberry place.

looking down the strip from the riviera.

the sahara, our hotel.

the view from our hotel room, this time during the day.

a closer look at downtown.

the stratosphere during the day.

a look at the mountains to the north of the city.

a look northwest.

a closer look northwest.

that's it for now. i have more pictures that i'll upload in this thread later. those pictures include pictures from the ghostbar at the palms, as well as the wynn on opening day (kind of).

i was in there on my first trip. it's a lot of tourist stuff. there's a store in between downtown and the strip (on main street i believe). they sell real gifts: casino stuff like playing cards, roulette wheels, old casino chips, even slot machines.

here are some more pictures.

the strasophere again.

the mountains to the north of the city (i'm from delaware, so really big mountains are a big deal to me).

the mountains.

sunrise mountain, east of town.

looking northeast, towards nellis air force base.

sunrise mountain again.

downtown again (what surprised me is that the big office towers are pread out across the town; there's one by palace station, and the wells fargo building is on howard hughes parkway).

the view from the tunis tower at the sahara. this was the first time i got a good view of the mountains to the west of the city.

looking northwest from the tunis tower.

looking at the strip from the sahara.

the las vegas hilton and turnberry place from the sahara.

looking at more of the northern end of the strip now.

a close up of the middle of the strip.

another close up.

sunrise mountain again.

the mountains to the east that hide arizona and lake mead.

a close up of the strip, including paris las vegas and the brand new wynn casino just 2 days before it opened.

a lion at mgm.

more pictures later.

If you could have stayed one more day until Thursday 4/28, you would have been able to see the grand opening of the newest mega resort, Wynn Las vegas.

yeah, we were actually in vegas the day it opened (they were having a private party at 10 pm on the 27th, two hours before the 12 am april 28 opening), but we were on a plane to houston by 1130 am. i do have some picture of the wynn as we went past it on the monorail, so technically i have pictures of it on opening day. unfortunately, when i saw the wynn last year, i didn't take a picture of it, while the window panes were still being put up. it would've been nice to have a picture of it while under construction.

anyway, i'm bumping my own thread with a few more pictures. i'll have even more pictures later.

a picture of the lion at mgm.

a picture of the excalibur from mgm.

another picture of excalibur.

a picture looking north, up the strip, from mgm.

a closer look.

an even closer look.

here's some more pictures, including some pictures of the water show at the bellagio. as we walked along the strip, looking at all the hotels, we happened to walk past the bellagio as a water show started. so, we stopped to watch.

paris las vegas, as seen from a garden area at the bellagio.

the aladdin, as seen from the bellagio.

the bellagio.

and now some pictures of the water show.

caesar's palace.

looking north, up the strip, from the mirage.

a closer look.

another close picture.

Give me a real city any day. Vegas is fascinating for its excesses, but it doesn't really deliver what any decent city does routinely. First off, real cities have real functions, and those functions in themselves are both wonderful and interesting. The urban core of Las Vegas is dismal, and the Strip is like a bad acid trip. Yeah, if you're into pennysaver-style escort ads passed out on the street, gluttonous levels of amusement products at prodigal prices, and architecture at war with the canons of good taste, Vegas is for you. If you love real cities, even Salt Lake is much more satisfying.

the south end of the strip again.

the north end of the strip again.

i then decided to set the camera to not use the flash automatically, in order to capture the lighting more accurately. it worked, but any kind fo movement was also captured by the camera.

the north end of the strip again. rio is in the foreground.

the south end of the strip.

the north end of the strip again. you can see the stratosphere opinting skywards in the background.

the mid-strip area. rio is on the left, and the bellagio is on the right, along with several other casinos in the picture.

the south end of the strip again.

looking down through the glass pane at the outdoor area of the ghostbar. my foot is in the picture as well.

looking out towards the northwest area of las vegas.
