Every forum about Leeds seems to have a topic on local characters.

Here are mine:

The well spoken black beggar with glasses.

The old alcoholic who sometimes harrasses people outside of Park Lane College.

Mr Chohan! Runs Thorn Lane News in Gledhow. A living legend.

Several big issue people.

Goths and Emos outside the CornX

That guy who sits outside the Headrow Centre selling odd Carribbean stuff.

The man with the dog on Briggate who I don't think is that good.

One of the buskers who is quite good in Central Square.

Rudy (aka God) in Harrogate.

Because I once innocently bought some novelty sized cigarette papers from him and was offered what can only be described as "doobie"

Disgraceful
It's all kept in the hat!

still, he is a legend and has been there for as long as I can remember.

The guy with the dog however just trys too hard to be a legend, and I find him bloody annoying!

Although he sadly passed away in 2003 what about including Danny Freeman who spent 20 years raising money for Leukemia charities at the Trinity Arcade entrance to Marks and Spencer. Surely he should be included on any "Leeds Character's List". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/3563762.stm

As for Big Issue sellers is there still that Big Issue seller (Irish I think) outside the Merrion Street entrance of the Merrion Centre who says sir, maam, sir, maam to everyone?

I've been offered some stuff before, but to be honest he does a public service by just existing so we should probably go easy on him.
Rumour has it his name is John.

Yeah he's sound, even if his wares are a little dear

I remember a pretty shallow tv show about racism in Leeds. it was rubbish. But the highlight was a little scene showing Potternewton Park and our "John" strutting over it like Tony Moreno without a care in the world

Would that be the BBC's Black and White from around the beginning of the decade? Where they got a white guy from the home counties and had him trying to get jobs in Leeds at the same places as a black Londoner. I seem to remember it 'assumed' Leeds was a racist place. Like most people seem to do. I've been trying to get my hands on that for quite a while now for a relevant project, but it seems to have slipped off the radar.
Never mind, there's 'Fergie in Hull' to look forward to on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Has anyone ever met the terrifying 'guitar man', who walks around with his guitar singing really badly and harrassing you with his music until you pay him to go away? He's around Boar Lane/Corn Exchange in the evenings sometimes.

Also the crazy Christians on Briggate on saturdays. I believe in God but if there's ever such a thing as making a religion look bad, they're doing it.

Yeah, he's called Chris. I remember years ago we used to give him free tickets to my friends gigs at the cockpit and he did come along.

He only knows one tune on that guitar, just changes the words. He's sang a couple of favourites to me and my mates; 'His name is Chris, he's on the piss' and 'His name is Phil, he is so ill'. Very catchy.

I agree; I'm a Christian and I don't think it's a good way to spread what they stand for. I mean, I don't mind them but thinking about what other people must think. They seem to be fundamentalists which I have a problem with anyway, but also the way to help people isn't in that outward way- it scares people I think.

Does anyone know of smelly Colin Bentley from Farsley? He used to go the airport most days. I think he got banned after an embarrassing trousers related accodent. Quite a character.

What about Scientologists which I mentioned were on Briggate a few weeks back. Out of interest had there ever been Hare Krishnas in Leeds City Centre as there is on Oxford Street in London?

Also guess it is worthwhile mentioning the Socialist Workers Party who always seem to be on Briggate on a Saturday afternoon and what about those people who sell random things such as Mexican Wrestling masks and those odd huge long balloon things in a shape of a gigantic condom (and why do they wear large lab style white coats and has anyone noticed one of those sellers only has one leg).

Also I have occassionally noticed people walking around with advertising boards as there is in London although it seems to be something that has not taken off as in London as I have only see one or two people do such a thing.

Finally I remember until about the mid 1990s in Leeds city centre men who openly sold pirate videos out of briefcases usually I recall interestingly enough near to HMV on Lands Lane. I presume with attempts at cracking down on such illegal traders in the city centre as well as the rise of just downloading films off the internet has made such a way of selling illegal goods redundant?

yeah there's a bloomin' hare krishna monk who's on Lands Lane sometimes (or used to be a year or 2 ago), trying to flog books of wise sayings to raise money for his temple. I offered him 40p and him and my gf pressured me to give more, as the recommended price of the book was £3. I didn't even want the damn thing!

The mexican wrestling masks are weird, as are the guys with those strange whistles that make bizarre noises. That juice bar in thorntons arcade usually has a guy standing around on briggate with an advertising board, looking really really bored!

Other regulars I see around:

- A group dressed as native Americans playing pan pipes, they are quite good and always attract a good crowd outside WH Smiths, I've seen them regularly in Leeds and York.
- The tall Scot who plays bagpipes. He's been around the area for years and years but never seems to age. I've seen him in Leeds, York, Bradford and Newcastle.
- The one man band with the two sheep dogs that I think LeedsNo1 was refering to used to be a regular character in York for years, but seems to come over to Leeds a bit now. I don't think it's kind for the dogs to have to sit still all day, but I suppose they're used to it now.
- Phillipino (or similar) guy near the Headrow Centre sat with a load of thick chrome wire and pair of pliers, neatly bending hundreds of shiney novelty shapes and names to sell. Some people have a lot of patience.
