Surely would have been better for a more comprehensive revamp of the WY Playhouse as opposed to just an extension of one end. What will the new extension of the WY Playhouse house?
Isn't it to place the front of house ticketing box office area and cafe/bar.
This is to give it a front entrance facing
towards the city centre as opposed to it having it's back towards it.

I'm sure they'd love to do something more comprehensive, but they're on a very tight budget - a lot of which was raised via fundraising events and donations.

The works include improvements to the two existing auditoriums and adding a new studio space. It improves accessibility (new lifts to all theatres, to multiple levels giving disabled users more options), as well as new cafe/restaurants and hospitality areas.

only the Leeds forums would put this development on a completely different development thread. Surely this should be on the West Yorkshire Playhouse thread and if it cant be found, set one up! We are the worst for starting new threads unlike other forums who really link all new developments with new threads.

I don’t know if any preparatory works are under way but the area where the extension is to go have been fenced off for a few days. This morning, there were a couple of workers pootling about in a desultory fashion

^^ Looks like this will be getting underway very soon:

Shopping centre steps up to house theatre’s office and activity space

Shopping centre, Victoria Leeds, is to provide in-kind office and activity space, and a temporary box office, for West Yorkshire Playhouse while the theatre undergoes major redevelopment works.

A venue on 7 – 25 Eastgate, just across the road from the Playhouse’s Quarry Hill site, will house the Playhouse’s activity for Older People, Young People and Artistic Development. A temporary Box Office at 19 Eastgate will operate for audiences to buy tickets for the Playhouses’ pop-up theatre whilst contractors take over the main theatre.

Victoria Leeds’ generous support enables the Playhouse to continue with vital regular activity, allowing programmes such as Heydays, the largest and longest-running arts programme for older people in UK theatre with around 300 weekly attendees, to continue in temporary activity spaces on 7 – 25 Eastgate.

During the redevelopment period, the Playhouse will host a year-long programme of work in the pop-op theatre, a temporary 350 seater space built into the current workshop on the current Quarry Hill site. Audiences can buy tickets for the Pop-Up season at the temporary Box Office, housed by Victoria Leeds on 19 Eastgate, from 25 June.

West Yorkshire Playhouse Refurbishment and Extension

New thread for the £14m redevelopment of West Yorkshire Playhouse to include entrance extension onto St Peters Street; alterations to Playhouse Square entrance and alterations to internal spaces; new substation enclosure; new screens to service areas; new studio space in Rock Void area with supporting accommodation and new external lighting scheme.

A new entrance is also being formed into the existing Priestley Room from Gateway Court, and the existing entrance at Playhouse Square is being reconfigured.

The plans would also reconfigure the Quarry and Courtyard Theatre Spaces which have become dated and unfit for patrons using wheelchairs.

The new Quarry space would create two new vomitoria at the mid-tier level bringing level access into the heart of the seating bank, allowing more centralised wheelchair and companion positions, while the seating plan at the Courtyard Theatre would be redesigned to be less steep and create more wheelchair spaces.

Extra funding by LCC is being sought:

Council bosses asked to approve extra £1.4m in funding for landmark playhouse project

Council bosses will be asked to approve an extra £1.44m in funding for the transformation of the West Yorkshire Playhouse at a meeting next week.

Leeds City Council’s executive board will be updated on the ongoing requirements for the transformation of the West Yorkshire Playhouse, and will be given a progress report on the ambitious scheme to revamp and revitalise the theatre and its surroundings.

The plans include improved access to the theatre and a new city-facing entrance along with a new studio theatre space in the Bramall Rock Void.

Members will also be told about the creation of two new public spaces at Gateway Court and Playhouse Square which will link the theatre with other major ongoing developments in the area.

If approved by the executive board, the £15.8m redevelopment project, led in partnership with Leeds City Council, will be funded by £5.6m from the council, alongside a £6.6m Arts Council England contribution and £3.6m from the playhouse’s own resources, including a fundraising target of £2.75m.
