Hopefully it will be a tall build, up to 20 stories, especially if the new 14 Storey build gets approved across the road on the land of Blueprint (decision date was 31st Jan but still no decision made, good or bad?)

I feel like slowly church gate and the area around the bus stations is going to improve and have taller builds which may eventually lead to the Corah site being redeveloped (would love a commercial and entertainment area, possible ice rink location with 25 storey plus towers and public space bridging over to Abbey park) it’s a massive site.

Photo from today of the refurb of the building between Blunt’s Shoes and the Regus Offices (St. George’s Way). It’s becoming student flats I think:

Unrelated but does anyone else thing the mercury building (the one on the Ring Road) could do with a tower extension with the light hub/temp/date/time block much higher... 15-20 storeys? I think it would look pretty good if I’m honest.

Apologies all if this has been posted elsewhere. I couldn't locate it:

Leicester set to get new modern art gallery

Leicester is set to get a new modern art gallery as part of a £2.45 million project.

The city council has outlined plans to renovate part of the bottom floor of New Walk Museum to create a new area to showcase some of its works of art.

The area where the Egyptian exhibits were formerly displayed, until they were moved to the first floor, is to be revamped as part of the council’s wider plans to improve its flagship museum.

That wider plan involves creating a new ‘flexible education area’, as well as a new community space and moving some items in the collection from the basement into new stores.

There will also be new offices for staff based at the museum.

The council has committed £2.45m to the scheme but hopes to succeed in a bid for £2.5 million from the Leicestershire business rates pool to help with the cost of the scheme. Business rates collected by local authorities across the county go into the pool, in order for the money to be kept and spent locally.

If the bid was successful, some of the money would go towards mitigating the council's spend on the project.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: “When we moved the Egyptians upstairs it presented us with an opportunity in the vacated space.

“We can create a great new gallery.

“New Walk is our flagship museum and it is visited by some 250,000 people a year, but if we want to maintain its popularity as one of the top attractions in the region we must always look to refresh it and we must keep investing in it.

“We need to look at how we best display the fantastic art works in our collection.”

The city council is investing a further £125,000 in improving security at its museums, but has not revealed specific details about what measures it proposes.

There have previously been proposals to build a stand-alone art gallery for the city with various locations proposed, including another property on New Walk. However the idea was scrapped because of the expense involved.

It is so far unclear when the next set of improvements to New Walk will take place, but they have been written into the council’s budget which runs from April next year to March 2021.

Could the foundations cope?

Foundations probably couldn’t cope but it’s just something I’ve always thought, would be nice to have something prominent on a building of height on the ring road.

LOn another note, I’m theory and practice does anyone know whether it is possible to build a tower building on top of the viaduct, whether it is strong enough to do so or if it wouldn’t be able to hold the weight etc...

Surely you could open out one or two of the arches to build an under viaduct/ under ground car park for such a build to also provide for foundations.

Just curious on the viability.

I got a strong feeling the coronavirus is going to halt all future developments. It will be like the financial crisis before the simpson towers fell through 😕

Does anyone know what's being built where the Big John's that got burnt down on Humberstone Road was originally located?

It looks pretty substantial.

Wouldn't the money be better spent having a dedicated building for the art gallery - this seems to sum up the 'small' mentality of leicester. I live in a town of 30k people and even we have a dedicated art gallery and dedicated museums.
