Let's get things moving

HIGHER motorway tolls during peak hours and parking fees to pay for more buses were among ideas mooted at a transport forum held at Panthers on Friday.

The forum was organised by 10,000 Friends of Greater Sydney, a think tank based at the University of Sydney and aimed at promoting a more sustainable Sydney.

10,000 Friends has produced its own Sydney Integrated Transport Strategy which would deliver a 64 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Chris Stapleton Consulting transport expert Chris Stapleton, who designed the plan, said it would require no extra funding above what the State Government had already budgetted for transport.

Mr Stapleton told the forum public transport that ``went everywhere, even during the middle of the day,'' was needed.
``The Government won't do it, we the community have to be in charge,'' Mr Stapleton said.

``Sixty-seven per cent of people are `lost in space' it costs them a litre of petrol to get a litre of milk.''

Express trains leaving every 10 minutes from Penrith station would relieve M4 congestion and eradicate the need for timetables.

A freight line from Emu Plains to Enfield would clear the line for more passenger trains.

Express buses ``going where people need to go'' would also help. ``Less well off people would only need one car.

People love cars . . . but one morning we're going to wake up and switch on the ignition and there's no oil left.

``The community needs to feel confident it can go anywhere on public transport.'' A better public transport system would attract ``high fliers back to the city''.

Cox Richardson Architrects planning director Bob Meyer told the forum Parramatta should form the hub of transport for the new south west and north west development zones, with the Werrington arterial also serving these areas.

``There is not enough focus on St Marys as a hub,'' Mr Meyer said.

He said the highly successful free bus in Perth could provide the ideal model to serve Western Sydney. Parking fines could be redirected to pay for the bus, instead of going into Government coffers.

J Wyndham Prince director and Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce developemnt director Greg Moran said the State Government needed to change its legislation so that infrastructure was provided before development went ahead.

I like the idea of higher tolls, but it probably won't cut congestion as driving tends to be fairly inelastic like alcohol and cigarettes.

Also, increasing the parking levy in major CBD's will do the trick.

Higher tolls.... What a good idea. Now all the poor bastards who live in the north west and work in the city who have no PT can spend more than the $20 a day they already spend on tolls. :bash:

Maybe they should take some of the rebate off the M4 so those in the western line can start thinking about PT. The rebate should then go to those who use the M2 everyday.

Agree.

They should only increase tolls in areas where there is a decent train line.

Exactly lad. If one part od Sydney has a decent system such as those along the western line, then they should have the highest tolls. The M4 costs 20c to use after the rebate. There should be no rebate. Who gives a shit what Bob Carr has said. He is not in polotics anymore.

It's time to end the rebate and it should be the same for the M5. Labor are just too scared to remove the tolls because it will cost them votes.

I also support equal pricing for tolls across the city. Ridiculous that those using some motorways are subsidising the tolls for others.

don't foget that the toll revenue goes to private companies (not the public coffers) and their leases do expire. the idea here is that the road then becomes free. the m4 is on the better side of becoming free, it is over halfway through its lease. no government would dare break the agreement they have with western sydney, it would mean the end for them. the issue of having to pay for the m4 runs deep in western sydney.

Well they can **** off as far as i'm concerned wtf does everyone else get penalised?????????????????

It's fucking bullshit that anyone coming from the North West gets slugged with 3 fucking tolls. The stinky shits from south western sydney don't have to pay for the bridge either, it's time the government made it more equitable for those in the north, I am sick and tired of North Shore and Hills residents funding the rest of city. We have been doing it long enough through the tunnel and bridge tolls, where is the equity? If anything the tolls should all be reduced on the bridge, tunnel, m2 and LCT, tolls on the M4 and M5 hould be put up.

It is pretty ridiculous that someone travelling to the city and back from say, Campbelltown, will only have to pay 4.50 (ED northbound) and get the M5 on rebate.

Whereas someone coming from say Kellyville or Castle Hill will pay M2 citybound, LCT citybound, bridge toll, and then the LCT and M2 outbound, adding up to 20 bucks or so.

AND Campbelltown has a rail line as well.

I see they have relesed the preferred project report on the Northwest Rail Link. I have tried to download it but I keep getting an error. I have requested a copy on cd.

Hopefully this will start to get moving.
