Cotton industry of Uzbekistan
Cotton production in Uzbekistan is important to the national economy of the country. It is Uzbekistan's main cash crop, accounting for 17% of its exports in 2006. With annual cotton production of about 1 million ton of fiber (4%-5% of world production) and exports of 700,000-800,000 tons (10% of world exports), Uzbekistan is the 6th largest producer and the 2nd largest exporter of cotton in the world.Cotton's nickname in Uzbekistan is "white gold"

Indorama Kokand Textile LLC (IKT) is a joint venture company with the National Bank of Uzbekistan, with Indorama Corporation holding a majority shareholding. The company was commissioned in Uzbekistan in July 2011 as part of Indorama’s strategy to establish its presence in the emerging economies of Central Asia and to expand its global spinning business. The company has a natural advantage of sourcing competitively priced raw cotton fibre from domestic sources and adding value for shipments to its global markets.
IKT has set up a state-of-the-art ring spinning facility with front end technology in compact spinning, which includes the most technologically advanced machinery and equipment from Europe and Japan. The facility is the first compact spinning facility in entire Central Asia, which produces 100 per cent combed cotton compact yarn.
IKT predominantly serves the global market of spun yarn, targeting more than 90 per cent of exports mainly to Latin America, Europe, Bangladesh, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Turkey. IKT produces the best quality yarns in Uzbekistan.

The state Joint Stock Foreign Trade Company "Uzinterimpeks" was established in 1991, and operates in the system of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The main field of activity of SJSFTC "Uzinterimpeks" is implementation of export-import transactions, providing intermediary and consulting services, attraction of foreign investments. SJSFTC "Uzinterimpeks" has a vast experience of work in international trade and is one of the largest foreign trade companies of the republic which annual commodity turnover makes nearly 1 bn. dollars of the USA. The main part of commodity turnover is made by realization of the cotton fiber which annual export exceeds 300 thousand tons per year.
Long-term experience of cooperation of SJSFTC "Uzinterimpeks" with foreign countries expands from year to year geography of export of cotton fiber.

The volume of production and government procurement of raw cotton in Uzbekistan up to 2020 will be gradually reduced from 3 million 350 thousand tons to 3 million tons.

"Calculations show that this amount of raw cotton will allow, on the one hand, to fully satisfy the demand, particularly for textile and light industry in raw materials based on its deep processing, on the other hand, to maintain a firm position of our country as a supplier of cotton fiber and its derivatives on the world markets.
The reduction of raw cotton production to 350 thousand tons releases about 170.5 thousand hectares of irrigated land. And thus, as a rule, the land subject to release is a land with low capacity, where the cotton yield does not exceed 12-15 centners per hectare, while the average yield is 26.1 centners per hectare. Saline lands, lands in the foothill zones unsuitable for the cultivation of cotton are also subject to release.
Equally important is the fact that in recent years there is a dramatic drop in prices and demand of cotton fiber on the world market.
Cultivated lands released from-under cotton will be sown with vegetable crops, including potatoes, fodder, oil plants, gardens and vineyards.
As a result of the optimization of cultivated areas and the introduction of modern agricultural technologies, by 2020 it is planned to bring volumes of production of cereals to 8.5 million tons with a growth of 16.4%, increase potato production by 35%, other vegetables - by 30%, fruits and grapes – by 21.5%, meat – 26.2%, milk – 47.3%, eggs - by 74.5%, fish – by 2.5 times.
All these measures should lead to a substantial increase in the exports of these types of food," - said Islam Karimov.
