This is a wonderful stadium, however the one thing I dislike is those wide steps. Is it normal in stadiums to have such wide steps?

the architect had in mind the concert configuration !
When you lift up the half pitch you have the "box" for concerts. in a case of emergency people must be evacuated in a certain time.
that's the reason.

There's a modification of the name: "Grand Stade Lille Métropole" become "Stade Pierre Mauroy". Really not cool, that's the name of the old Prime Minister and old Mayor of Lille, who died some days earlier.
