LILLE, FRANCE SELECTED TO HOST FIVB MEN’S VOLLEYBALL NATIONS LEAGUE FINALS

The Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille, France will host the FIVB Men's Volleyball Nations League Finals from July 4-8, 2018

Home to French Ligue 1 football team Lille OSC, the state-of-the-art Stade Pierre Mauroy opened in 2012. Located in Villeneuve-d’Ascq, the multi-purpose stadium features a retractable roof and has hosted a number of elite sporting events, including rugby, basketball, handball and tennis.

Following the decision, FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said:
Stade Pierre Mauroy reflects our vision for the Volleyball Nations League perfectly. It is an advanced, modern stadium which will give fans an unrivalled experience, whether they are experiencing the atmosphere live or watching at home.

The FIVB aims to be at the cutting edge of sport entertainment and we firmly believe that State Pierre Mauroy gives us the perfect platform to achieve this goal.”

By selecting Stade Pierre Mauroy as a destination for the Volleyball Nations League Finals, the FIVB continues to push the boundaries of technology, innovation and broadcasting. Spectators will witness the elite athleticism of each nation’s best players and see volleyball like never before, through new angles and replays. The FIVB is working with IMG to produce its content in-house, maximising quality and promoting a compelling, on-court narrative, which is easy for fans to engage with and understand.

Damien Castelain, Lille-Métropole President said:
"Since 2015, the Pierre Mauroy stadium has regularly welcomed world class sports events to our city. That series continues in 2018 as the venue prepares to welcome one of the most prestigious events in men’s volleyball. The event once again demonstrates the quality of our stadium, and I would like to thank the French Volleyball Federation for the quality of the discussions we have had with them.”

French Volleyball Federation President Eric Tanguy said:
“It is a great source of pride for France and the French Volleyball Federation to welcome the Finals of the Volleyball Nations League, especially for the first edition of a competition which replaces the World League and will take place in the exceptional setting of the Pierre Mauroy stadium. Our friends from French basketball, handball and tennis have enjoyed using the venue, and now it is the turn of the French volleyball team which I am certain will up to the event. I am sure the French public will be present to support Laurent Tillie’s players in Lille, but also in Rouen and Aix-en-Provence in the two magnificent venues which will welcome those Volleyball Nations League pools. A little over a year before the European Championship takes place in France, these events will also provide us with a full-scale rehearsal.”

France coach Laurent Tillie said:
“I look forward to France welcoming the Volleyball Nations League Finals. It is recognition of the work done by the France players and coaches and the guarantee that we will play in front of our fans at a tournament of this kind for the first time ever. Last year in Brazil we were able to test what it was like playing in a football stadium full of fans. It will be similar at the Pierre Mauroy stadium, but this time the fans will be cheering for us! Whether it is in Lille or at the Kindarena in Rouen, where we have always received a warm welcome, or at the new venue in Aix-en-Provence, these matches will be a chance for us to experience some great moments with our fans. We will do our best to provide our fans with a spectacular event and the best results possible.”

The Volleyball Nations League is the FIVB’s new premier competition, in which 16 world class teams for each gender will battle to become Volleyball Nations League champion. More than 35 cities and 20 countries will host the tournament, bringing the live action closer to volleyball fans around the world.

Has the divide between the two halves of the pitch ever caused any issues, and also what's the pitch quality like?

You mean the retractable roof? As far as I know, no, not some sort of leakeage or something.
No, I mean the pitch. Has the divide halfway along it ever been noticeable or affected play?
Lille fans ran on to the pitch and attacked their own players during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Montpellier.

TV footage showed supporters surging towards the Lille players and aiming kicks at some of them after the final whistle of the Ligue 1 match.

French League officials have confirmed they will investigate the incidents at Lille's Pierre-Mauroy stadium.

Lille, who won the last of their three Ligue 1 titles in 2011, are one place off the bottom of the table.

Curious, does anyone have an answer to this question?
^^ Nope, because indeed there's no issue on this. French technology. ;)

Anyway, you're sooo 2010 Rob, with such question...I mean I already asked it back then...in 2010...
Ha! I posted the question a month ago because someone on another forum was worried about the pitch at the new Spurs stadium and I wanted to cite Lille as an example of where it's been done before. But I wanted to make sure there had definitely been no issues before I did!

It's official for 2018 Davis Cup half-final, it will be inside stade Pierre Mauroy.
France versus Spain.

Can anyone tell me where I can find some revenue figures for the Lille stadium?

Do all the extra events bring in substantial additional revenues?

Has this extra investment helped to pay off the stadium earlier than similar stadiums?

And where does the extra money go? Lille, as a club, has not performed better since the opining of the stadium so I don't think it goes in their pocket. Municipality, sponsors?

As per Wikipedia, Eiffage, a construction firm, owns the stadium, not Lille. so you'd imagine all non-soccer event revenues go to them.

Lille probably doesn't care when the stadium gets paid off. They pay rent, it's not really their problem.

Actually, nope... I mean that's a little bit more complicated.

Eiffage (one of the largest construction companies in the world, and the third French largest one) is indeed operating the stadium and will do so for the two (or three) next decades since they have built and funding the construction....the city (owner of the land lot, etc) is paying back them on a monthly basis.... In 2032 (or 2042 LOL) the said municipality/local public authorities will be full owner of the stadium .

Welcome in France dear 5portsF4n.... :D (since that the same story for most of our new stadiums, Lyon & UArena excluded)
^ So Lille OSC is not the owner of its own stadium?!!! Not the best long-term option I'd say.
^^ Anyway, LOSC is in great financial troubles & in great danger today with its huge debt (risking administrative relegation to the amateur 3rd division, if not worse :()

^^ That does not sound very good..... :(

But they are still above the danger zone in the table, albeit with the tiniest of margins.
