Linz Lightrail with underground section

Linz is the third largest city of Austria and has an interesting narrow-gauge (900mm) lightrail/tramway system.

The most interesting part about it is the 1.9 km long underground section with three underground stations and there are plans to extend the underground section. Opening of the underground section improved the quality of public transport incredibly, because now all lightrail lines are able to serve Linz railway main station.

All the pictures in this posting were not taken by me. They come from various sources, mainly the great website: http://tramway.at

Bombardier Cityrunner Tram in Linz SolarCity (L2 terminus). This station was opened in 2005. Plans exist to extend this line for better connections with railway.

All new extensions do not share tracks with cars and busses anymore, where possible

Crazy people. Can't believe how someone is that stupid and drives in there!

it happened in Vienna too in the entrance to the USTRAB/premetro, but because there is no asphalt around the rails the journey ended much quicker

In addition to the tramway system Linz has the Pöstlingbergbahn which is also operated with lightrail vehicles. However it will soon cease to exist in its current form, as it will be connected with the tramway system, which requires heavy changes. The old trams will be modernized in order to be able to operate on the tramway lines and new ones, resembling the old ones, will be acquired.

Oh.. I reall feel sentimental about the old Pöstlingbergbahn.

What are they going to do, integrate it fully into the tram network, ie with trams driving further towards the city center, or just a modernisation of the Pöstlingbahn?

If those steps are helping to make the PT system in Linz better, its a good thing though and as I can see the tram vehicles will continue the colour scheme traditions at least.

The problem is that the Pöstlingbergbahn is technically unique and not compatible with the tramways. Hence they will destroy the PB in its current form and make it another tram line. All old vehicles will be heavily changed.

In the end all PB will use the tram network and will start at the main station. Unfortunately they will still require a special ticket, which is nonsense in my opinion.

Linz has a great system which should be a role model for similar sized cities in Europe without urban rail systems. What's the population of Linz (city proper and metropolitan)?

189.528 inhabitants by January 2008 (see http://www.linz.at/zahlen/040_Bevoelkerung/040_Hauptwohnsitzbevoelkerung/)

The numbers about people in the metro area differ a great deal according to different sources form 271.000 to 290.000 (wikipedia) up to 393.511 (http://www.nachhaltigkeit.at/monthly/2003-12/gastkommentare.html).

Bielefeld is also an excellent example of a small city with a great PT infrastructure system yet it is one of the most forgotten German cities.

Ok, so its about modernisation of the Pöstlinerbahn, and not about real integration into the tram network.

There are two reasons:

a) Pöstlingbergbahn is not accessible for handicapped people, which it should be according to Austrian law. So lowfloor vehicles had to be introduced

b) If extended to the main station it's more attractive for tourists

I still hope that they will change their minds and there will be no extra tickets for Pöstlingbergbahn, however I don't think that will happen any time soon.

Antwerp (Belgium) has also a premetro system, but it's quite crappy over here.

Vienna has got one, too. At the moment, the lines 6, 18, 62, 65 and the single light rail line use it, but there are MANY things that are just wrong about it.

I thougt Vienna (Wien) got a real subway system? Or is it like Brussels, witch sections with real underground trains and underground trams combined?
