Anfield....If only it could talk...

It is one of the oldest and most famous football grounds in the world. Originally the home of Everton Football Club between 1884 and 1892, Anfield has long since become synonymous with Liverpool Football Club and the amazing success achieved by the Reds.

Everton were kicked out after a dispute over rent...and the owner of the stadium decided to start he own team...Liverpool!

"The very word Anfield means more to me than I can describe."

Bill Shankly 1975

Anfield is famous for always having an immaculate pitch!

Hillsborough Memorial

Shankly Gates...which now feature on the Liverpool Club Badge

Its was announced in 2000 that the Reds were to leave Anfield for a new 61,000 seater stadium....to be known as...Anfield

Work will hopefully start this year...thats the plan anyway!

Liverpool fans showed the world last tuesday that they are trueley among the best of Europe. What an atmosphere!
Why are they building a new stadium? I don't see why it is necessary.

Cart,
I'd guess they just don't have enough room to expand Anflied any further which does afterall now not bare much resemblance to the Anfield of legend(unlike say Old Trafford). I personally like the design of the new stadium with the divides between stands offering a bit more of an "english" style ground plus the location is alot nicer in Stanely Park just a few hundred yards away from the current ground. Theres a pretty good film rendering of the new ground on the site below..

Dammit....Im sure I posted it....I typed it out anyway....anyhoo

Anfield is too small, and we need to keep up with the competition!

The extra 16,000 seats could get us an extra £0.5M a game....and £10M a season!

Unquestionably one of the best football stadiums in the world. Its a pity its going to disapear. I feel the same about Highbury(though Arsenals stadium is in my opinion less well equiped for modern demands than Anfield).
Still I am hopeful that their new stadiums wont be as sterile and anonymous as the biscuit tin stadiums that have sprouted up all over England over the last few years. I think location is very important and it does seem both clubs have at least got their priorities right on that level.

Anfield will be turned into a hotel and leisure facilities, regenerating the Anfield area for 2008 when Liverpool is crowned capital of culture!

Other Anfield History....

Bill Shankly quotes...

On the fans: The word fanatic has been used many times.. I think it's more than fanaticism. It's a religion to them. The thousands who come here, come to worship.. it's a sort of shrine, it isn't a football ground.

On This Is Anfield sign: It's there to remind our lads who they're playing for and to remind the opposition who they're playing against!

Now I dont know who these people are (except for Benitez)....Im just showing what an attraction the sign is...

After Juve and Chelsea I'm in favour of staying at Anfield, there's no arena in the world that can touch its quirky nature and atmosphere. The fans will be as partisan and manic as ever but no architect can plan and deliver the piece meal Anfield in one fell swoop.

Also would be losing the kop as we know it...Single tier, single stand 80 rows deep!

The new kop...I dont know if we're looking from it or at it....I think at it!

At it eddy. How can that be the Kop? the other end is the same size, shape etc. I'd prefer a horseshoe for 3 sides and a moody stand alone Kop.

Well Anfield is with Old Trafford among the best known stadia in the UK, for me.
Well I like the new proposal as well, though it does leave the 'historical' value of Anfield Road. In any case, good luck next week ;)

There may be no other stadium in the world that is more closely linked with the passion and identity of its club than Anfield.

But I'll still be pulling for Milan next week :)

I am a Feyenoord seasonticketholder and after Feyenoord, Liverpool has always been my favorite team. In some ways you can find a lot of similarities between the two, and I wear both jerseys with pride! :)

I'm planning to go visit a match at holy Anfield before it's being demolished. Is it easy to buy tickets as a foreigner? Cause buying tickets for Feyenoord as a foreigner can sometimes be hard or practically impossible because of all kinds of anti-hooligan measurements like clubcards and such.

The new stadium looks good btw, eventhough it's gonna be hard to say goodbye to Anfield. But be glad it's not going to be some awful multifunctional arena-type disaster like the Amsterdam Arena, Arena auf Schalke or some American stadiums.
