Stars sparkle for new movie in city Apr 18 2006

HOLLYWOOD stars Bob Hoskins and Stockard Channing will be in Merseyside this week filming their latest movie.

The pair are starring in Sparkle, about Liverpool singer Sam Sparks who is aiming to break into the big time.

The lead role is taken by Liverpool-born actor and former Teachers star Shaun Evans.

The 17-day shoot is expected to generate 100 temporary jobs with around 38% going to Merseyside-based crew and a further 48% being awarded to workers from other parts of the north west.

The film was brought to Liverpool through the city council's film office after a grant from regeneration agency North West Vision.

The Film Office, the first of its kind in the UK, has provided locations which will see Liverpool become a double for London and Wirral star as Canvey Island in Essex.

Alice Morrison, chief executive of North West Vision said: "We are very excited about 'Sparkle' because this is another chance for Liverpool to shine,."

Sparkle is a comedy from acclaimed writing and directing team Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger and is about an opportunistic young Liverpudlian who comes to London and decides to sleep his way to the top.

Life gets complicated when he meets a powerful older woman, Stockard Channing of Grease and The West Wing, then falls for a girl of his own age.

Last year was a record-breaking period for the city's film and television industry with production levels the highest recorded - rising by more than 40% in the last 12-months.

More than 180 productions were shot with respected stars such as Winona Ryder and Patrick Stewart heading to Liverpool alongside up and coming actors.

Lynn Saunders, head of Liverpool's Film Office, said: " We have got the UK's most experienced film office and it has an excellent reputation. We have got fantastic contacts and can deal with enquiries very quickly and efficiently."

I thought I'd give this a thread because I find it interesting the amount of times our city is used by Hollywood producers and we just take it for granted. This thread is somewhere for us to put stories of future productions in.

They get a grant from Europe, or somewhere, to film in Liverpool, hence the turn up, pretend the back street is in London or whever, and get back to London as fast as their Bently's will take them.

Who cares as long as it brings the money in!

This is all great stuff, but it is vital that we build an industry on the back of these little acorns. At this moment the only part the city plays in these films is a few extras get a job for the day.... even the catering comes up for London.

This is why the media discussion we agreed to explore as one of the first initiatives for 21CL is so important. In addition to the broadcast infrastructure, the technical base, the creative skills being utilised, stopping the brain drain the city suffers, the crafting of a broiadcast capability for the city, making it's communications infrastructure more sophisticated..etc, etc, etc... cleaners, butty makers and carpenters also have their job prospects enhanced.

Liverpool has great opportunity to grow in the post terrestrial broadcast licencing world.. and covers all the fields of film making, distribution, agency development and of course.... CREATIVE TALENT

There is a wealth of talent and many people trained in the industry here in Liverpool. I myself have benn directly involved through many years a 'Background Artiste' or 'Extra' if you want to call 'em that and have been on location within some of Liverpool most historic areas. Seeing some of Liverpools buildings and warehouses transformed was special and I only wish I had my digi camera back then. Some of the films/ productions I was involved in:

David Copperfield - BBC, used the streets around canning street and warehouses by the L1 development, Henry Steet.

The 51st State - Film, I was involved around The India Buildings area in that. Was extremely proud to have welcomed Samual L Jackson to Liverpool and Robert Carlisle too.

The last one I did was about 12 years ago... a short for C4 called the bunloaf... the story was actually good, but the most exciting stuff was watching all the ferrel kids running round Garston under the Bridge at midnight!

I remember seeing something getting filmed down Old Hall Street, must have been around 2001. They had change one of the buildings (opposite the cotton exchange), to look old and from the New York or somewhere like that, think they were they for a couple of days. An ideas what the movie could have been?????

Last summer they filmed some scenes from Beyond Friendship with Wynona Ryder and Tom Conti (?) around the Fenwick Street area. The film hasn't been released yet but when it does, what appears to be 40s New York will be 00s Liverpool.
