Liverpool - Manchester Night Life Which Prefer

Sounds an easy question but it depends on age and what you want. Having recently returned to Liverpool after living away my first few nights out have been confined to local pubs catching up with close friends or drinks with family. However last Saturday night found me taking a trip up the M62 to visit Manchester. Why I hear you ask. Well long story involving old friends from Uni. Firstly I must say and no disrespect to the girls back in Dublin, but the girl's in Manchester certainly know how to dress for a night out. The boy's dont' follow to far behind but I wish they didn't dress in those skinny tight tops. Don't get me wrong the girl's and I fully appreciated the pecks and muscle's on show just looked wrong (if you know what I mean).
Anyway this weekend see's me hitting Liverpool for the first time in approx
12 mths. I have no doub't that us Liverpool girls will be out doing the Manchester girl's in the fashion stake's but what I can expect from the bar's /clubs. My elder sister is always moaning to me that clubs don't cater for the over 30's (sorry sis) but not my problem yet. Anyway what is your experience's, what can I expect........

What is it that your looking for? I would say avoid Concert Square as it is full of kids/hen parties etc... which I personally don't enjoy, however it can be a good place to start the night as it is lively. The new revolution and Alma de cuba just up from concert sq are cool. If you like classy places then try the albert dock and victoria street. Where as your sis might like mathew street if she's a bit older, take her to flares or somewhere like that. If you want to stay out all night then garlands and society are great nightclubs that your sis will even enjoy and the girls in these places will put manchester girls to shame!

I prefer Liverpool to Manchester as Liverpool people know how to enjoy themselves!

I find manchester a touch "up its own arse" been going out in liverpool now for ten years and can count bad nights on one hand!

Still i believe its not where you go but who you go with!
I like some of Manchester's old, Victorian boozers - the Lass O'Gowrie, Briton's Protection, Pevril of the Peak. They sell, cheap, good-quality, locally-brewed ale as well, from the likes of Hydes and Joseph Holts. Although, like everywhere, Manchester has lost many local breweries, it has kept hold of more than anywhere else - even London now has only one, significant, family brewer left in the city - Fuller's - now that Young's is moving production to Bedford.

A bit of an old man's perspective but there you go.

Classic, classic pubs. I wouldn't dream of going to Manch without visiting them, particularly the Pev.

Great places, there must be others I don't know, as my knowedge of Manchester is based on little more than several work trips.
I find that manchester has more of an underground scene these days which is on offer every weekend. Liverpool has great club nights but they are only on every few weeks and the variety ain't great.................................................. sayin that you cant beat our woman haha

Again tho it depends what your looking for.

^^Manchester better for clubs; Liverpool better for bars? Fair to say?

Always preferred the underground scene in Manchester to be honest.

(Over) simplistically put, the cliquester Liverpool undergound scene early-90's to the present day were always far too concerned about not stepping-out-of-line with each other and having all the "correct" 60's garage band refs to hand.

Manchester couldn't give a shit about all that (you don't have to when you've got New Order and Joy Division) and seemed to be way more open to new, experimental sounds. The actual music rather than the social pecking order being much more to the fore.

Liverpool definitely has the edge as far as traditional boozers go. In fact I'd say Liverpool is the best of the big cities when it comes to high quality, traditional pubs serving real beer.

The Lion Tavern, Ship and Mitre, Dr Duncans, the Philharmonic, the Fly in the Loaf, Old Ma Boyles, The Baltic Fleet (all of which amongst the very finest you'll find in these isles) in a relatively small area.

Bars too, I reckon. I'd rather go drinking in places like Korova than almost anywhere in London I've been to.

I was shocked on arriving in London in the late nineties to find that it was difficult to get a drink in Soho (!) after last orders.

This after I'd been drinking in modern bars like Modo and the Baa Bar (wayyy before it was nasty) for years. Not too mind a hazier, early drinking past in places like the old Casa and Bonapartes amongst others. And, worst come to the absolute, drinking without end in the 147.

I think the Dry Bar in Manchester predated any modern-style cafe bar in London, as well.

Dr Duncan's didnt seem that traditional to me when I went in on the forum meet. I remember it being pleasant, but in a contemporary way... laminated flooring, venitian blinds, leather seating...
You're thinking of the Pig and Whistle, Accura. That's a very old pub, and still very pub-like in vibe and function, although it has been given a modern style makeover recently, which I'm not 100 per cent on but is, as you say, pleasant enough.

Duncan Dunc's, conversely, is a modern pub, in an old building, designed to look and feel like a Victorian boozer. It dates from only the 1990s but occupies the ground floor of the Alfred Waterhouse-designed Pearl Assurance building, hence the ornate cermanics at one end of the pub.

Yeah, but it's about the beer man! And for that Dr. Duncan's is great!
LIVERPOOL OR MANCHESTER!

Sorry, it has to be said, LIVERPOOL, without a doubt.. Manchester has a few clubs, and few bars, its nightlife is very diverse, and sorry to say the back bone of its night life is not there. There is a lack of Dance Clubs, and in all honesty, Oxford Road is probably the best place to go. Northern Quarter is non existant, and the Print Works is a disgrace. Most of my student mates either go to Liverpool or Sheffield for a night out. Manchester is good for certain things, ie shopping, just like any other city, yet everyone knows that when it comes to going out for a night out BIG SYTLE, you go to one of the following in order of popularity and great experience

LIVERPOOL
LONDON
NEWCASTLE

Manchester's bars and few clubs are to spread out, the bars in the printworks are to pretencious, and to expensive, Liverpool has the docks which are expensive but it holds the scenery and character well. Dont get me wrong i love Manchester, its a cracking city, and its very laid back, as much as i miss Liverpool being at Uni here, some bars in Manchester have that down to earth common feel like "Brannigans". As for the rest, ie 5th AV and 42's, Jilly's etc, they are crap, and if you want a good night out in Manchester go to Fallowfield or Didsbury, its like Allerton Road, smaller, but good for a piss up.

Manchester is very far behind in the Food & Beverage industry, thats a fact, and most hotels, clubs, bars look to Liverpool and London for ideas, more so with the managing and promotion, again its a fact.

Local Mancunians i know, admit Liverpool's nightlife is more explosive, bigger and better, but they say that there clubbing scene died when the city became T TOTAL COSMOPOLITAN. Its asthough the city centre is full of students and yuppies on a night out.

Post 1996- the city went through a massive change, for better obviously, but somewere along the line the nightlife was shot t pieces, and it will be a long time for that to pick up again.

Manchester is excellent for student dive's and bars, especially along oxford road, without a doubt, it has catered greatly for students along oxy road, its good, but it cant compete with Liverpool for a night out. Leeds is sound too, even sheffield, the problem with Manchester again is the city's organistaion of buildings, its a small city centre, Liverpool's is well larger and zoned for areas of nightlife, Manchester is to far spead out, and people really cant be assed going the whole way.

As a say, not a dig in the slightest, the city is my 2nd home, but the nightlife isnt that good, and who the hell picked Manchester, its known the nightlife is bad, so why pick it, why not Newcastle or Leeds?

I have no idea but I would have guessed Manchester. From forumers postings it looks like I was wrong.

London's night life is my favourite - all things to all people.
Bigger city center? Sorry had to start with that one.

There is a lack of Dance Clubs
Obviously not been looking in the right places. Theres a good number in the city center an so what if they're spread out!? I love floating from A to B off me rocker :)

Stick to Oxford road and the Printworks though, go ahead an think thats the best night out in Manchester, please, I'd like to laugh a little more.

To answer your question.

Theres the same clubs, pubs, bars in every city, theres just a few that stand out and usually rightly so. I've done Newcastle, Liverpool and not once have I really fathomed an eye lid as to any real difference there is between one or the other. I'd be glad to point a few bars an places to go, but it definitely depends on what scene your into. Sure you'll have a good night though and remember, it is whatever you make of it ;)

There is a lack of Dance Clubs, and in all honesty
One thing that raises my eyebrows though is this 'how people dress' for a night out lark. I mean no matter the place, they all dress the same! Theres this stretch of motorway called the M62, that puts the distance of thirty or so miles between us. I doubt Topman, New Look and Coast alter they're clothing catalog city to city! I mean, I'd understand if it were Manchester to Baghdad, but seriously, size up two fit blond birds from differing cities and I bet you couldn't tell the difference in effort and shagability...

:D

If your gay, or a student, Manchester is far superior for a night out im afraid. The Universities, in terms of their layout and georgraphy are easy to get to and from and there is a great nightlife.

In terms of a nightout for the heterosexual population, Liverpool wins hands down. People come in from all over the place, as Manchester's only real concentration of alot of bars is Canal st, so if that aint your thing, there is only the print works and Deansgate Locks.

Manchester has alot of big towns around it, so i can only assume the draw from elsewere has lead to their never really being a big nightlife district being created, whereas liverpool has Wood st on one side of town and mathew st on the other.

Ok, i've just about stopped laughing now... but i have to say... have you actually ever been to Manchester???
Personally i prefer Liverpool, (and i'm a pretty serious clubber etc) and i am from this area. But to suggest that Manc's city centre is smaller than Liverpools... well... i guess all i can say to that is... what drugs were you on at the time...lmao

I love Liverpool... but, sorry mate, Manc is much, much bigger and their number of nite clubs and bars, (and their diversity), far outnumber what we have to offer.
Having said that... i would much rather have a nite out in L'pool, (although Leeds has GOT to be the kewlest)
