Liverpool Theme Park

Should Liverpool have one?

I think the Garden festival site would have been ideal for this with a monorail going all the way from the airport along the coast and to the Albert Dock, the path being pretty much clear.

Having seen water parks/theme parks abroad, lavish gardens could still have been incorporated into the scheme.

It could have been multi themed with Maritime, Football, Music, famous people ideas for the rides.

As it seems tourism and leisure is big and set to get bigger with Joe Anderson's idea even for a tourism academy to be built, I think it's an opportunity missed, or perhaps not even thought of.

If people go to nondescript places such as Alton, Southport, Warrington and Charnock Richard for their thrills and spills, imagine one in Liverpool with all we have to offer.

It would be nice but a theme park that isn't as good as Alton Towers would be rubbish. You're talking big money. I'd like to see a good roller coaster in New Brighton or Southport. No one is interested in shit Camelot style rides.
Keayman... good idea this.

I actually researched into this and put a proposal forward for exactly what you describe as part of a University project. As Dingle says though, it would need big money invested by a big operator as anything less would be poor quality.

Take a look at Disneyland/Ocean Park in Hong Kong. Disneyland has its own station and link on the MTR light rail network and the carriages have windows shaped like Mickey Mouse. Tourism is big business over there but surely its an idea we could look into over here. Something along the lines of Universal Studios with Music/Sport/History themed areas. Anfield/Goodison Rollercoasters, Titanic themed 3D ride, The Beatles ride along the lines of rock and rollercoaster ;-)
A waterpark would work but money will always be an issue I'm afraid, it's a no brainer considering the amount of rainy days we get though.
In a similar vein, I wonder whether setting Liverpool up as a major destination for a travelling fair would work? Nottingham's Goose Fair takes place every October for a week, and is the UK's largest travelling fair, attracting all the major travelling fair operators, who often make a point of bringing their latest attractions to the event. The size of the fair (over 500 attractions from roller coasters to hook-a-duck stalls and everything in between) regularly attracts peoples from a long way outside the Nottingham Metro Area, providing custom for the city's hotels and restaurants. With the council presumably also receiving some kind of ground rent for use of their land (it takes place on a council-owned recreation ground), you can see how it provides a healthy boost to the local economy and council coffers. We already have a number of small travelling fairs throughout the year. This would merely be a case of getting them all to turn up at the same time, then market it. With relatively little outlay, I think is something that Liverpool could get up and running.

Paul, surely a waterpark idea and rainy weather can go hand in hand, once you're wet you're wet ;)

I found this to actually be true when in Portugal it stated spitting, it was a close day so nobody was bothered lol.

Yeah but when it's raining it's cold. Can't imagine much worse than being soaking wet, half naked and freezing on the banks of the Mersey for a £20 entrance fee.
We had a theme park of sorts in the dome after the festival. It was called Pleasure Island and as I remember it was really good. It had 10 pin bowling, roller rink, a grown up indoor soft play area, quasar, go-karts and the park around the dome was kept up. It always seemed busy but for some reason, it disappeared in a cloud of controversy and the park was left to rot. If it was here today, I've no doubt it would've grown into something more substantial.

Oh no it would have to be indoors. :)

Nah you've gotta have faith in our ability for overcome negativity.

Blackpool seems to do ok with not much else than a beach, piers and tower.

An indoor Heated - but much bigger than Rhyl sun centre.

A tourist attraction in itself in a city which is a tourist attraction in itself.

At the time when the development of New Brighton was being discussed, I thought then that a Unversal Studios complex would be great there. The location is similar to that in Osaka, Japan and it seemed to me that the land available in New Brighton was bigger than the Osaka site. Both places were similar in being wind-swept seaside locations in need of revitalisation.

Is there any reason why a Universal Studios, or something like it, couldn't be part of Liverpool or Wirral Waters? I know it's not part of the planning submission, but it would certainly be both a direct and an indirect job creator. I wonder how many companies would move to Liverpool or start up there because of the existence of something like that?
The statue of Neptune in the sea by New Brighton would draw people in.

New Brighton now has a casino and new hotel, so its starting to relaunch itself as a leisure destination. If you read some of the plaques on the promenade there is reference to menfolk from Liverpool making the journey over to pay visits to the brothels of New Brighton many years ago. Maybe New Brighton should legalise prostitution and reinvent itself?
