The two cities featured on my Power Shift thread. Bringing the quote here as it helps to understand their dynamics:

As we're running out of cases, let's go into provincial levels. As a starter, northern Paraná state, with

Londrina

vs

Maringá

Londrina was incorporated as a municipality in 1934 and Maringá in 1951. Both are part of the British project (more on my signature Norte do Paraná - 80 Anos) that turned the rainforest into a chain of planned cities connected by railway surrounded by a very dense rural area, attracting people from all around the world, specially Italians, Germans and Japanese.

82 km is the distance, as the crow flies, between the iconic cathedrals of both cities. 101 km by car.

Defining the scenarios:

1st - Municipalities of Londrina and Maringá only ----- (city proper)
2nd - Londrina - Cambé and Londrina; Maringá - Maringá and Sarandi ----- (urban area)
3rd - Londrina - Cambé, Ibiporã and Londrina; Maringá - Maringá, Paiçandu and Sarandi ----- (urban area)
4th - Londrina - Cambé, Ibiporã, Londrina and Rolândia; Maringá - Marialva, Maringá, Paiçandu and Sarandi ----- (urban area)
5th - Londrina - Apucarana, Arapongas, Cambé, Ibiporã, Londrina and Rolândia; Maringá - Mandaguaçu, Mandaguari, Marialva, Maringá, Paiçandu and Sarandi ----- (metropolitan area)
6th - Londrina - IBGE microrregions of Apucarana, Assaí, Faxinal, Londrina and Porecatu; Maringá - IBGE microrregions of Astorga, Floraí and Maringá ----- (expanded metropolitan area)

Map with the 8 regions making the 6th scenario. The 5 easternmost form Londrina, while the 3 in the west, are Maringá. The area in red has 20,641 km² divided in 72 municipalities, one of the largest concentrations of cities in Brazil. 2,003,615 inhabitants as 2012:

^^
As we can see on the tables, not yet a shift, but Maringá is slowing eroding Londrina's lead in every scenario. Only in 5 out of 30, Londrina is growing faster, last time in the 1970's. And since the 2010-2000 sample, Maringá is adding more people even in absolute terms, in 4 out of 6 scenarios.

2014 was 100th edition of Paraná State Championship. The two metropolises of northern Paraná made to the final while the capital, Curitiba, was out for the first time since 1992.

Pics from the first match of the final in Londrina, on Café Stadium for 28,000 fans:

And the second match, in Maringá, on Willie Davids Stadium, for 19,000 fans:

As both matches finished in a draw (2:2 and 1:1), there was a penalty kick dispute and Londrina EC defeated Maringá FC (4:3).

Aside São Paulo, northern Paraná is home of the largest Japanese diaspora in the world, counting about 100,000 people.
