Century City Center

Intended to rise 37 floors and 570 feet, JMB Realty's Century City Center is one of the very few active ground up office buildings proposed in Los Angeles. Local architect Johnson Fain is responsible for the design, which is fitting as he is also the architect behind neighbors SunAmerica Center and Constellation Place. The building will stand next to the future Century City Purple Line station at Constellation and Avenue of the Stars, which has brought the proposal into the fold of the ongoing controversy about the subway route under Beverly Hills High School. The tower has also been subjected to opposition from a "neighborhood," group that is clearly run by rival landlord JP Morgan Chase.

Just what LA needs; more urban density and good architecture. Hope to see ever more of these types of towers in the city.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I just saw this video overviewing the next phase of the Purple Line extension...


...and was reminded that the Century City station is supposed to be incorporated into this tower. Has anyone seen any further indication of what's happening with this thing? Any new addition to the CC skyline is welcome to me!

Long considered one of Century City's last chances to become a little more hospitable to humans, a 37-story office tower developed by JMB Realty and designed by Johnson Fain is now dead in the water. The LA Times says that, given the interest from developers in land to build condos, JMB has decided that it might be way more profitable for them to drop the office tower altogether and just sell the site, which has approvals for 483 residential units (in two 47-story towers and a 12-story building) left over from their own pre-economic-crash dreams of a housing complex.

"A new owner could quickly resurrect JMB's plans for the condo development," muses the Times, and that seems a likely, profitable route. Last August, China-based Wanda Group paid $420 million—"the equivalent for $1.7 million a unit"—for 9900 Wilshire, a site with entitlements for 235 condos. That's nearly double the $878,000 a unit Related paid back in 2005 for the land to build The Century, a Century City condo tower that's passed the Candy Spelling test of fanciness. (She owns a $35-million penthouse.) Last June, Miami-based developer Crescent Heights got started on a 283-unit, 40-story luxury residential tower right on Santa Monica Boulevard, and there are plenty of existing condos in CC, so a new residential project would fit right in. (But apparently not be too much.)

The JMB site at Constellation Avenue and Avenue of the Stars is also poised to sit right by a future stop on the Purple Line subway extension, which has really brought out the crazy in anti-subway Beverly Hills. This Constellation Avenue stop would require tunneling under Beverly Hills High School, which the overheated school board and other locals have very, very vocally and legally opposed. The opposition groups have repeatedly suggested that Metro wants to tunnel under BHHS and put a subway stop on Constellation purely as a favor to JMB, giving them even closer proximity to public transit. Will the sale quell their fears of foul play? Probably not!

No price has been set for JMB's 5.5-acre property.
Well damn. I am not excited about the prospect of another condo-only tower here, especially since there's the potential for a great transit-oriented mixed-user on top of the CC Purple Line station. Here's hoping someone with an inkling of urban vision picks up the site and makes it at least a little hospitable.

Well damn. I am not excited about the prospect of another condo-only tower here, especially since there's the potential for a great transit-oriented mixed-user on top of the CC Purple Line station. Here's hoping someone with an inkling of urban vision picks up the site and makes it at least a little hospitable.
Don't worry, it's not your fault. lol. This project has been moribund for years. No use going into the ugly history.

In any event, the office market is CC is very hot, but the luxury residential market is into the stratosphere. If the land is still zoned residential, which is what it historically was, it should be yielding luxury condo towers of its own in no time. And that's something that CC could really use.

The old condo proposal didn't include ground-floor retail, but that's likely because it predated the Purple Line extension.

Whatever winds up going on that property will probably have something, considering that the dead office proposal and the Century Plaza redevelopment were/are going to have shops and restaurants.

It is a shame that a potentially exciting development like this has been dropped.

Only a "potentially exciting" development can go into a prime site like that in Century City, especially if it's going to be attached to a future metro station. I say they need to start a new proposal from scratch on that huge site.
