A Padaria Potugueza

Breakfast Heavyweight
Lovely Lisbon Series 3

The commotion at A Padaria Portugueza
caught our attention, so we decided to dine
there, as we knew with the huge crowd it was
attracting, it must be offering something good.

Indeed, the breakfast menu was very delicious, the
long queue and the massive crowd was understandable.

A Padaria Portugueza which literally translates to the
Portuguese Baker is a wonderful restaurant that serves
superb breakfast to jumpstart an awesome day in Lisbon.

One of the most historic districts in the world where
the world's greatest explorers of the 15th century
originated during the Golden Age of Discovery.

Within Belem there is an abundance
of wonderful cafes and restaurants,

…beautiful parks,

…historic places,

…and museums.

A visit in Lisbon is never complete

LovelyLisbon Series 5

Located at Lisbon's Belem District,
we were thankful to have randomly
chosen to dine at Queijadas de Belem,

...as it served us some of the best
traditional Portuguese dishes,

Sardinhas Assadas com Salada

Bacalhau na Brasa

Salmao Grejaldo

...that made us crave for more.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos and Torre de Belém
Golden Age Of Discovery Monuments
Lovely Lisbon Series 6

Two must visit places while in Belem
are the Padrão dos Descobrimentos
or the Monument to the Discoveries,

…the monument celebrates the Portuguese
Age of Discovery or Age of Exploration
during the 15th until the 16th century.

…and the ancient Torre de Belém,
where ships used to depart to explore
and trade with other parts of the world.

Both historic monuments are located at
the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary,

…a visit to Lisbon’s Belem District is never
complete without seeing these twin attractions.

Antiga Confeitaria de Belém
Glorious Iconic at Pasteis de Belém
Lovely Lisbon Series 7

Since 1837, Antiga Confeitaria de Belém began
making the original Pastel de Nata, following a
time- honoured tradition of an ancient recipe from
the monks at the nearby Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.

One had to brave the long and chaotic line,

…as this patisserie comes recommended by
locals, by Portuguese tourism authorities,
by tour guides and almost every guidebook.

To savor creamy custard, nestled in
a perfectly baked golden pie crust,

… it should be lightly dusted with
cinnamon and sprinkled with sugar,

…for a delightful dessert nirvana.

Lovely Lisbon Series 8

The Praça do Comércio is the grandest
of Lisbon’s squares,

…surrounded with classic symmetrical buildings that
houses shops, restaurants and the city’s tourism office.

The equestrian statue of King José I
serves as a magnificent centerpiece.

It is a perfect starting point,

... for tourists wanting to explore
the historic ancient city of Lisbon.

LovelyLisbon Series 9

We were happy to chance upon Fabrica Das Enguias,

…as we really wanted to try their famous
Pickled Canned Eel in Escabeche Sauce.

The store offers free tasting of bite sized
white bread, topped with the canned eel,
that looked good and it tasted very good.

We bought a can and got the shock of our lives
to see a creepy whole eel all coiled up inside

Igreja da Magdalena
Unplanned Amazing Find
Lovely Lisbon Series 10

We were on our way to visit the Lisbon Cathedral when we
mistook this Igreja da Magdalena for the popular church.

… dedicated to Mary Magedxelene

…who could be the second most powerful
woman in the bible next to the Virgin Mary.

It was unplanned yet amazing find,

Alfama’s Elevador de Sta Luzia
Scenic Route to the Castelo
Lovely Lisbon Series 11

It was another case of mistaken identity.
We earlier mistook Igreja da Magdalena
for the Lisbon Se and we had the ancient
Elevador de Sta Justa in mind and ended
at Alfama’s Elevador de Sta Luzia instead.

Anyway, the Miraduro de Santa Luzia,

...a lovely view deck above it, provided
an awesome view of the city downhill.

..and the ancient Viana do Costelo,
served as a rustic scenic shortcut,

…to the Costelo de Sao Jorge,
Lisbon’s main uphill attraction
where my family was heading to.

Castelo de Sao Jorge
Fortress of Lisbon’s Historic Past
Lovely Lisbon Series 12

The walk to the castle can be draining,
as the cobbled road was steep, but we
had a slow but leisurely stroll in an
ancient neighborhood with centuries old
buildings of quaint Moorish architecture.

But the effort was all worth it.
The majestic Castelo de Sao Jorge
also known as the Lisbon castle, built
at the top the hill provided an awesome
view of the ancient city of Lisbon below.

Much of the present structures are in ruins,
but continues restoration is being undertaken.

Some parts of the ruins of the former
Royal Palace of the Alcáçova has been
restored and converted to a museum,
called Nucleo Museologico.

The massive 11th century Moorish Castle
has been restored to its original glory

Castelo de Sao Jorge is the fortress
to Lisbon’s history, it is Portugal’s top
tourist attraction, and not to be missed
by anyone visiting this beautiful country.

Comidas de Santiago
Rustic Roadside Restaurant
Lovely Lisbon Series 13

From the Castelo de Sao Jorge, we stumbled
upon a lovely, rustic looking restaurant called
Comidas de Santiago. The dishes at the menu
looked interesting so we decided to dine there.

They initially served us loaves of bread
and a platter- full of olives for appetizer.

Comidas de Santiago servings are huge,
good enough to be shared by a family of
four in our case, two adults and two kids.

Everything tasted very good from
the velvety Vegetable Cream Soup,

… to the Roast Lamb with Roasted Potatoes,

…and the Cod with Cream.

Comidas de Santiago is a nice roadside restaurant
that serves excellent traditional Portuguese cuisine
that comes in massive portions, yet very affordable.

^^ massive is normal in Portugal :D
^^ massive is normal in Portugal :D
Indeed.

That helped us save money as we have
to order less and just share the food among us.

We were in Paris earlier, considered as the culinary
capital in the world- but the food in Portugal is much
more tastier, more complex, yet more affordable.
