LRT/MONORAIL/MRT Train Announcements and Signage at the station.

188067 Views 544 Replies 69 Participants Last post by  AsHalt
IMHO our train announcement should be clear and use the proper voice. recently the new KJ line train announcement not so good compare to the previous one. the best train announcement so far is in the KLIA transit and KLIA express. The voice is clear and the pronouncation was good. Why lrt and monorail cant implement the good one...

The signages at the stations also need to change because the one that using now looks so bad.

South Korea WIFI speed=maximum 128 mbps
South Korea IT literacy rate and WIFI/INTERNET access among populations: 98%
South Korea WIFI/Internet coverage within the country: <>80% including inside underground metro train and tunnels.
But you look at the signage system they have at their metro system and other public transport system:
South Korea never asked their people fully rely on mobile apps/software for signage system and directions.

but eventually we still have to come back to the basic
The basics is to get updated maps/directions in the first place.
Updating hard copy maps/directions cost a lot.
Updating soft copy maps/directions cost negligible.
Nobody understands what it means to have good wayfinding and signages better than a man who has to pee in a mall he has never been to before.
You do realise that we are talking about a few types of signages here ...

(1) Arrows (hanging from ceiling, on the walls, on the floors) pointing to specific locations/amenities within stations/malls.

(2) Maps/Schematics of all locations within a floor of the stations/malls. Or even for all floors of the stations/malls.

(3) Maps/Schematics of all locations of interest around neighbourhood of the stations/malls.

The last two can be much more easily updated in softcopy. Using mobile apps such as Google Maps. Or even just as a PDF downloadable from a website, that can be viewed and printed if needed.

Why don't you tell the Malaysian government to improve the WIFI or internet coverage and speed first BEFORE we can implement this idea??? Even such an IT and INTERNET advance/savvy country like South Korea did not dare to touch on this idea. In fact, NONE of the advance/developed country in the world dare to accept your idea or practice it fully/thoroughly. In fact, Google Maps are not accurate either.

Now I understand why some of the monorail stations are still unfinished.

I believe Prasarana have visited many MRT stations in the world. It is not difficult to implement, maybe you (assuming you work with Prasarana) could bring some of the ideas, compile it into a presentation, and make some decent comparisons and present it to Prasarana.

We are not asking Prasarana to create an announcement on each elevator for people to stand on the left or beware of germs or something, but just proper signage. I bet even an intern could do that. :)

You mean something like this ?

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/SME/html/NRE_PAD/plan.html?rtnloc=PAD

But RapidKL/Prasarana have nothing like this. Apart from the JP, I don't see any other significant update of contents on their pages (you can go through the whole website in much less than 30 mins). I'm sure they still keep all those stations floor maps but why not use them?

With the MRT halfway completed and set to be integrated into RapidKL's networks, you must understand that the people have a valid concern that whatever shortcomings we see in our current signages will be steamrolled into the new system as well.

And if the 8 platforms KLSentral MRT, LRT and KTM stations are indeed to be integrated whole, I'd rather we do the signages properly this time rather than have something like the one at Masjid Jamek.

Have you seen this Google Maps Street View of Osaka Sakaisujihonmachi subway station?

Google maps neighbourhood schematic view of same Osaka Sakaisujihonmachi subway station?

Both of those street views and schematic maps are perfectly viewable from my Android Samsung phone on Maxis 3G. It doesn't need WiFi internet connection speed.

In fact, Google Maps are not accurate either.
In many countries (other than Malaysia) Google Maps have opened themselves to be edited/updated by users (not just professional mapmaker) and gets more accurate as a result.

Not all public transport users have smartphone you know, some still prefer to use nokia 3310.

Unless prasarana will provide smartphones as incentives to all the frequent users. haha

Yes, those original autocad engineering floor plans. Somebody needs to convert, update it to similar to the above.

And if the 8 platforms KLSentral MRT, LRT and KTM stations are indeed to be integrated whole, I'd rather we do the signages properly this time rather than have something like the one at Masjid Jamek.
I am sure in such future big integration works a stations architect/designer would be engaged to properly do the signage.

Sorry, did you detail out the problem with Masjid Jamek signages in an earlier post?

One of the research studies I would like seen done, is to actually survey/measure the percentage of LRT users in a moving train using smartphones.

Visually on trains that I take, I have the impression of at least 50% of the users are using smartphones.

Please read my comment PROPERLY. I never say they never accept or never implement such ideas, they might implement it but NOT FULLY or THOROUGHLY. That's why Osaka, Tokyo still spend their budget on MAINTAINING these physical signage systems nationwide. Have you use GPS before??? MOSTLY are not accurate. Do you think Japanese and Korean government are brainless, if they can do away with the physical signage system, they would have done so a long long time ago. You thought they don't have professional experts on these matters??? This is not about you own a smartphone or not, as I said, how WELL and how FAST the coverage of our WIFI and internet connections??? As I said even countries that are so advance and well covered by WIFI or internet connections also did not dare to FULLY and THOROUGHLY apply your ideas. Do you think SEOUL and TOKYO has inferior WIFI or internet connections and coverage like Malaysia??? And did you see the physical signages are still very well maintain at Osaka stations??? Much better than Malaysia. You can argue until the end of the universe but the fact is physical signage is the most fundamental and basic and it is here to stay to serve the public and passengers.

I would like to see big improvements in KL Sentral (as well as Nu Sentral) signage when the MRT comes on line. Our KL Sentral is getting bigger.

Lets see......we will have, in future

- KTM Komuter
- KTM Intercity/ETS
- KLIA Transit
- KLIA Ekspres
- Kelana Jaya line
- Sungai Buloh - Kajang line
- KL Monorail line

For any properties falling under KL Sentral, regardless of Stesen Sentral itself, Nu Sentral or the Sooka or the offices, there should be one standard signage.

The question now is, who's in charge? SPAD (the land public transport agency, on part of the government) or the MRCB (developer of KL Sentral)?

In another matter, we already have the route number of each train line destination. Laluan 1,2,3,4 etc on SPAD map.

So far I only see the route number being included by RapidKL in Masjid Jamek station. I would like to see to see such SPAD railway route number to be included by other operators in their signages such as ERL, KTM etc., particularly in interchange station such as KL Sentral, Bdr Tasik Selatan etc...

The irony part is SPAD HQ is at KL Sentral.

Slightly irrelevant but this diagram is a wee bit confusing, doesn't the LCCT station comes after KLIA, and both KLIA express and Transit service actually terminates at KLIA 2

NVM Disregard that, diagram is old. Pre-KLIA 2.

I would just like to say that I totally disagree on the sentiment that just because it is forever changing, or that it changes too fast, that we should not invest in hardcopy signage.

Come on, not everything changes so soon and even if it does, part and parcel of being the authority is to provide authoritative info in a timely and dependable manner. While it sure is convenient using third-party services such as Google Maps, Google Indoors or whatever, and to say that updating info on it is cost negligible, information provided on Google is always as-is, it is only as good as someone who puts up on it. RapidKL, Prasrana or whomever should know that we always need redundancy, and you can’t expect everyone to want to go online to check something simple up. Like, if I were in a train, and the public announcement was down for some reason, I would sincerely appreciate if a station I have never been too, or it because I am confused because they all look-alike (happens when you ride the subway, or you travel overground at night) to be a able to tell me where am I. If going online were just for details or other interesting but relevant information, or the latest updated info that may be OK. But you cannot simply go on as if signage or on the ground information is not important and in order for one to use a particular metro system, one only needs to buy an expensive guide book, cause that is what it feels like.

While there may be an app for everything. Not everyone downloads every app, and even if they did there is just not enough time in the world of them to use it. Also, how many people do you know actually uses a smart phone to plan out trips using public transport in Malaysia. What is being asked is quite simple. We need reliable information delivered to us appropriately. You can’t expect everyone to own a smart phone to be part of the loop. That’s discrimination against the poor right there. People have a right to information.

I think the soft copy version shall be a complement to proper signage. The debate is not on whether we should scrap the signage completely in favour of app like thing. It is about what can we contribute to the system.

If prasarana dont hear our complaints dont expect us to sit still and do nothing. Let the smart people take advantage of the technology. At least the old school man has someone to ask.

We should take it to the next level. In the end, we are the one who use it.
