Proposed development of former Library and Church into apartments now approved.

Plans approved for transformation of former church building

Plans for an apartment scheme within a former church building in Leeds city centre have been given the go-ahead.

Designed by Brewster Bye Architects for developer Gold & Amber, Hope City Church, which fronts onto York Road close to Quarry House, will be transformed into a five storey building containing 52 apartments, with ground floor retail space, and will be named Lucent Square.

The community church group that previously owned the building had outgrown the venue, which was also once a medical clinic and library service HQ for Leeds City Council.

Now that plans have been approved, work stripping the building back to its original structure will start in December.

Chris Austin, managing director at Brewster Bye Architects, said: “This building will feature a simplistic, attractive design style incorporating sleek cladding, frameless glass balustrading and ribbon glazing, as well as incorporating underground parking for 34 cars.

“Due to the nature of the building, which is very deep in parts, we have created some unique generously proportioned apartments on the first three floors. These will have an en-suite bedroom, kitchen, laundry room, bathroom and a living/dining room that has a glazed opening giving light to a further flexible room that lends itself to a variety of uses.

“The buildings slightly elevate position and the proposed large balconies give stunning views over the city. It is in an area of the city that is rapidly changing and this new development will make an important contribution.”

Patrick Finn, from Gold & Amber, said: “Hope City is the third scheme we have worked on in Leeds with Brewster Bye Architects. The firm has successfully created three unique and innovative designs that totally rejuvenate the existing tired buildings. As with our other Leeds city centre schemes – Brunswick Court, North Crescent and Kirkstall Gate, we are expecting the apartments to appeal to both investors and owner occupiers.”

An interesting planned refurb (I like the balcony elements and the modernist design) but probably the hardest sell for any City Living company to claim that this area is 'up-and-coming', unless the Hope Inn plans to reinvent itself as a gastropub.

As if you would know what the Hope Inn actually has to offer 😏

Hi Robbos, the building above is for a different scheme to this thread, it is being turned into a gym. Yes, they have done an amazing job of restoring the original architecture and features within the building.

For anyone that is interested in seeing the work that has been done on this building there is a great Facebook group here:

Shannon Street is closed off according to Google Maps until October 8th, right around the boundary of this site. Anyway got any idea if it might be progressing? Pretty sure they’re good to go from a planning perspective.

First time back in Leeds centre in 3 months and noticed this development on York Road is under construction, covered in scaffolding, only got a quick look at it and couldn’t take any photos sorry.

Was literally going to ask if any updates on this yesterday but couldn't recall the scheme name... Good news to see another run down part of the city see some investment.

Slowly but surely York Road to the East is seeing investments from Rushbond old Library/baths to the proposed flats opposite Quarry Hill

This is a surprise. I have not been up there for a while either and have not seen anything in the press etc. I will try to take a look when I have the chance. Very good news if they have started.

So they have stripped this out and are removing concrete etc There is a sign for TCL structures who seem to be a concrete specialist. The surprise though is that the building is completely open at the front - that cant be right surely.
