Luxury Car Tax!

2792 Views 73 Replies 33 Participants Last post by  BrisbaneROCKS
The federal government will increase the tax on luxury cars priced over $57,000 in the first budget tax increase in more than a decade.

The tax increase, to be introduced in Treasurer Wayne Swan's first budget, will affect the sales of about 105,000 cars per year, News Ltd reports.

The tax will increase from 25 per cent to 33 per cent and is mainly aimed at high-end imported vehicles.

Ninety per cent of luxury cars are imported. The tax rise will also impact on locally produced vehicles such as the Holden Caprice, Holden Statesman, Ford's Falcon G6E and the Territory Ghia.

News Ltd reports that the tax will apply to the GST-exclusive value of cars that cost more than $57,123.

Mr Swan said people on six figure salaries were "doing pretty well in Australia".

"It's abundantly clear that there are some people who are receiving government benefits who are on very, very high incomes, who don't need them," Mr Swan told News Ltd.

"And we ought to have a discussion in Australia about whether we can continue to afford that."

Spot on, as long as it is balanced by giving this extra revenue to the people who need a helping hand. The high-end are doing pretty well and if you are amongst this group you have been dealt a good hand in life but you will get the whingers saying its unfair.
It doesn't go far enough. 4WDs should be taxed +200% and I've never seen a hummer here but they should be banned so we can keep it that way!
The Labor Party howled long (and successfully) last year that the Coalition had no mandate to introduce Workchoices because it was not raised at the 2004 election. This possibility of raising this tax did not come up at the last election. Does Labor, therefore, have a mandate for raising it? No.
This is disgraceful. Adam & Steve's working executive family from Southbank were planning to buy a imported luxury car soon and this is going to put a huge dint the couple's $360,000 budget. Typical Class Envy politics - taking money from those who worked soooooooo hard for it and giving it to those who do nothing.

Its about time we took away the upper class welfare that Howard and Costello handed out to all and sundry over the last 11 years.

Hopefully it will promote some of our own cars at the expense of the expensive fuel guzzlers from OS. Rich should pay more, people with bigger cars that take up more space should also pay more.

Your a fine one to talk about political mandates Minnie Twin. When did Howie and Costello mention workchoices before the previous election? Huh Never. Shame. Really though you should bring that up in the political thread if you want to talk about it.

What if i buy a Merc that uses 5L per 100km? What a waste of time and thought.

Sums up my position on buying small, cheap cars.
Swapping the Opel small cars for the Daewoos was the worst decision Holden has made for quite a while.

That and not having a diesel commodore ready yet.
so, do we have any opinions on the 'Brain Drain' too? Tall poppies?

Do you work for the liberal party?!

I think most would agree that Workchoices had more of an impact on more people than this proposed tax....your logic is seriously flawed, why not just consider the idea on its merit?

In my book this is a great idea. I would agree that a similar tax should be brought in on 4WD for people living in cities.

It's the hard worker who would one day like to own something better than an aussie-made dinosaur who will suffer through this hike, although the gravy-trainers who abound on this forum will protest with the predictable cries of "If you can afford to spend that much on a car then you can pay the tax on it too."

I'd expect that with impending union pay demands, and import tariff increases, the humble Commodore might be nearing the 57k mark shortly, but don't expect the threshold to move under this sad excuse for a government. We'll all be driving "luxury" Daewoo's in 2010.

Oh, don't get me wrong...I would LOVE if this tax was brought in on ALL new cars. It would be the beginning of the end of our over-reliance on the automobile. Now lets hope the tax is used to fund public transport...but not likely.

That´s right - Tax the ´Rich´. Way to go Labor, you´ll show them that you are fighting for those ´battlers´whoever they may be.

Tax those who are / have worked the hardest in our society. Who have put themselves through tafe/university working 30-40 hours a week to pay for their courses. Who are slaving away to send their children to decent schools. Those who are more likely to have overcome huge adversity to make something of themselves.

If I want to save hard and buy an Audi, I don´t see why I should have to pay higher taxes for it. We are living in a free market.

Someone suggested higher tax on all cars to combat our reliance on them - fair play, I agree with that.

Next stop : some antiquated welfare nanny state.

To answer your question. Yes it does. The same mandate that Howard and Costello had for their 11 budgets. I went to a few boring budget lockups under Howard, I watched the jurno's sift through the pages for the hidden details. Details so secret that all mobiles were removed and all landlines in the rooms were switched off.
Rudd and Swan are entitled - like any other government - to leak some details, and hold others until the night.

Luxury car tax may lower car prices: RACQ

Great

ABC
The RACQ says Federal Government plans to add more tax to luxury cars may benefit buyers.

Treasurer Wayne Swan will use tomorrow's Budget to increase the tax rate on cars over $57,000 from 25 per cent to 33 per cent.

While the Federal Opposition says the move will drive up the price of all cars, Gary Fites from the RACQ says it could have the reverse effect.

"Given the strength of the Australian dollar and the fact that it is a very competitive business selling cars, I wouldn't be surprised if you saw makers or importers who are challenged with going over this limit actually looking at their pricing, looking at their specification," Mr Fites said.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we see in fact some tuning down of some prices just to make sure that some do come in under that limit."

Not happy with this move at all. Its not even 'taxing the rich'. Its hitting the middle income earners who want to have something nicer (and in many cases more fuel efficient) than a Commodore or Falcon.

And theres whinging about a brain drain? Well when you don't give incentive for people to stay here so they can prosper they will move elsewhere or just drop out of high school and make 100k a year digging holes on a building site.

Way to build a future.

As much as I support the new government this is a very very stupid move.

Revenues and taxes from drivers already go beyond paying for roads.

Increase PT prices and fund PT. Why should a driver pay for PT??
