Inner Madrid has some lovely buildings and grand avenues. However, a lot of the older style apartment buildings need to be either demoilshed or refurbished. Man, they are UGLY and such an eyesore. Why are there so many disgusting apartment buildings, particularly in Madrid??? Were they built during Franco era? Is anything being done to get rid of them???

They're all over Spain, and Southern Europe too. Yes, the most of them were built during Franco's era, when Madrid started to grow quickly, because of the people coming from the countryside, doubling its population from 1950 to nowadays. But I guess the reason that explains why there are so many horrible blocks like those doesn't have anything to do with the political system nor the fast demographic growth but with the economic situation that Spain was immersed in, and with the most usual urban-planning theories that ruled then.

There're no plans for getting rid of them since they are functional anyway, but in some very prestigious locations within the city centres of the most important towns they're being refurbished (it's still something odd though). And also some of the most poor and worst-looking neighborhoods are being gradually pulled down because of the expansion of nearby rich neighborhoods which are more profitable for property developers.

Great thread again btw!
