Madurai to get elevated highway - TAMIL NADU
Madurai will soon get its first elevated highway on New Natham Road as part of four-laning of the 38-km stretch. The highway, that runs for 7.3 km, will begin from Indian Oil Corporation junction at Chokkikulam and end at Chettikulam.
Tender for the project, to be executed by the National Highways Authority of India at a cost of Rs. 618 crore, will be opened on March 22. The work involves acquisition of 1.6 hectares of land. NHAI Project Director V. Saravanan and revenue officials inspected the land which has to be acquired.
The Madurai Corporation had proposed an elevated highway from Goripalayam to Palanganatham under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission years back but it did not take off.
Though the four-way road will come up on the existing alignment, land is required for constructing ramps for entries and exits at Naganakulam and Tiruppalai apart from ramps at the IOC junction and Chettikulam. “Land acquisition are not avoidable,” an official said.
The elevated highway is necessary since there are too many inter-junctions on this road.
A total of 220 pillars would be erected in the middle of the road. The pillars will have engravings of Goddess Meenakshi Amman and Lord Kallazhagar. On the two other sides, the Tamil Sangam era life would be painted. Special spotlights would be put up to make the engravings and paintings visible even during nights, the official said.
The road will have footpaths on both sides with railing. Besides, utility ducts would be provided on both sides for telephone, electricity and water lines.
The NHAI has proposed to beautify tanks such as Naganakulam Karuppan Oorani, Krishnankoil Teppakulam and Oomachikulam along the highway. The tanks would be fenced and a walkway would be provided around it. The tanks would have granite seating arrangement, statues and lawns.
The rest of the road for 31 km would be widened with four carriage ways of 3.5 metres each along with a median at a cost of Rs. 450 crores.
