The Chennai ORR - Sriperumbadur contract has also been called for along with this project and it is of 13 KM (2.5 yrs for completion). If both the projects kick off at the same time, and there are no delays, this could be the FIRST elevated corridor in Tamilnadu!!!

The Maduravoyil - Port elevated road is being revived with DPR in progress. It could take more time to complete.

I like this -

This will definitely a way to go forward rather than piers with posters & green color :)

Madurai to get elevated highway

Madurai to get elevated highway - TAMIL NADU

Madurai will soon get its first elevated highway on New Natham Road as part of four-laning of the 38-km stretch. The highway, that runs for 7.3 km, will begin from Indian Oil Corporation junction at Chokkikulam and end at Chettikulam.

Tender for the project, to be executed by the National Highways Authority of India at a cost of Rs. 618 crore, will be opened on March 22. The work involves acquisition of 1.6 hectares of land. NHAI Project Director V. Saravanan and revenue officials inspected the land which has to be acquired.

The Madurai Corporation had proposed an elevated highway from Goripalayam to Palanganatham under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission years back but it did not take off.

Though the four-way road will come up on the existing alignment, land is required for constructing ramps for entries and exits at Naganakulam and Tiruppalai apart from ramps at the IOC junction and Chettikulam. “Land acquisition are not avoidable,” an official said.

The elevated highway is necessary since there are too many inter-junctions on this road.

A total of 220 pillars would be erected in the middle of the road. The pillars will have engravings of Goddess Meenakshi Amman and Lord Kallazhagar. On the two other sides, the Tamil Sangam era life would be painted. Special spotlights would be put up to make the engravings and paintings visible even during nights, the official said.

The road will have footpaths on both sides with railing. Besides, utility ducts would be provided on both sides for telephone, electricity and water lines.

The NHAI has proposed to beautify tanks such as Naganakulam Karuppan Oorani, Krishnankoil Teppakulam and Oomachikulam along the highway. The tanks would be fenced and a walkway would be provided around it. The tanks would have granite seating arrangement, statues and lawns.

The rest of the road for 31 km would be widened with four carriage ways of 3.5 metres each along with a median at a cost of Rs. 450 crores.

Yeah. A few days ago, I saw people doing survey near Pandiyan Hotel and Bharathiyar Park. Was wondering the reason then. Understand it now. I don’t use the Natham stretch often so asking you guys, is traffic that high on that stretch that it demands an elevated flyover there? And since it is a project by centre, I think it’ll be quick and won’t face any major hindrance. The idea of statues/carvings on the pillars sound interesting but paintings on the other two sides won’t look good, I think.

While it's great to see some big project coming up, but when other stretches are crying for help to decongest, I wonder why this stretch is taken up. I understand that this stretch has some high profile offices, hotels and commercial establishments, I don't think it's even in the Top 5 busies stretches in Madurai. Hope this is a precursor to something else coming up on that direction.

^^ Yes. I also have the same thought. But, if you see that is the difference between the SG and CG planning / implementation. All the other busy stretches we are talking about are in the hands of state govt and they take forever to implement a project. Even in chennai, the SG controlled projects are poorly planned and executed (usman road flyover).
SG lacks long term thinking and they would wake up only after the problem has got very much beyond hands. Madurai ring road is one such example which got attention after much hue and cry.

Anyways, I am happy this is happening and this could lead city to develop beyond umachikulam in a faster rate. With people able to fly in and out (pun intended) of the city in matter of minutes, that area is something that will grow faster.

True. Only the NH from palanganatham till tirumangalam has the scope for proper 4 lane road.

Dindugal NH and theni NH are too narrow at certain points and has no scope for expansion. Probably an elevated road on top of the existing Madurai - bodi line from bye pass road till the NH ring road .

Of course , the simmakal stretch is a crucial one but Not sure why they chose Natham road instead of these NH .
Anyways hoping that these projects would kickstart soon unlike other projects which are only on papers till date .

Hope they are coming up with a visionary to develop an alternate road for the main thoroughfare (Melur Road). With extension of NH-785 from Madurai-Natham to Thuvarankurichi, the entire traffic from Chennai/Trichy can take this route to enter Madurai, which eventually will reduce the traffic in Melur Road and Mattuthavani area. And the NHAI has declared the Madurai Ring Road with numbering as NH-744A. With this Ring Road intersecting near Umachikulam, the traffic towards South can be diverted from here. Still it seems to be a better plan for Madurai.

Palanganatham to Kapallur is not NH.. Once new bypass road was built, NHAI exited all old NH.. In every other city, 4-laning was done by SG under SH dept.

Senthil,

This Madurai-Natham road is going to be a alternate road for traffic coming from Dindigul side too.. i.e. entire traffic coming from Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Bangalore can also use this Natham road as alternate road to enter Madurai city..

Dindigul-Kottampati connecting old NH7 to old NH45A is declared as NH and plans are there to make it as 4-lane road..

Dindigul to Madurai via Vadipatti is 67KM
Dindigul to Madurai via Natham is 73KM

With elevated highway going near to Vaigai river, entering Madurai city via this Natham would be a good option and time saver for vehicles coming from Dindigul side.

As you said if Natham to Thuvarankurichi is also converted to 4-lane road then it will be a perfect alternate road to Trichy, Chennai from Madurai..

I remember seeing project of improving Dindigul Kottampatti as 2 lane with paved shoulder and not as 4 lane. When was it changed to 4 lane? Natham Thuvarankurichi is just a major district road (MDR) and not sure if it will be converted as 4 lane. But considering this government spree to develop alternate roads, it is possible that it can be made a 4 lane if its topography permits.

Extension of NH 383 all the way till Karaikudi would help Sivagangai, Pudukottai district road users towards DGL, specifically during Palani pilgrimage seasons. It can very well be made 4 lane as it has lot of growth potential.

Thanks and regards
Ramesh

^^

Yes looks 2-lane with 1.5m shoulders. Saw a news 2000 crore allotted for Dindigul-Kottampaty NH upgradation.. but it could be error reporting.

Looking at the gvt website

Widening to 2 lane including 1.5 m paved shoulder of Dindigul-Natham-Kottampatti road of NH 383 -52.00KM - 340 crores

http://pibregional.nic.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1513052

Looks your wish is already fullfilled... reg extn of NH to Karaikudi & extn of Madurai-Natham highway to Thovarankurichi.

Overnight Natham became a 4-way NH junction..:)

NH-383 came out later in an unofficial announcement. And with Madurai Elevated Highway announcement, NH-785 came out.

New National Highways in TN as per the Gazette are as below. But no media coverage or announcement on this.
* NH-383 (Dindigul-Natham-Kottampatti)
* NH-383(Extn.) (Kottampatti-Thirupathur-Karaikudi)
* NH-785 (Madurai-Natham)
* NH-785 (Extn.) (Natham-Thovarankurichi)
