True. Only the NH from palanganatham till tirumangalam has the scope for proper 4 lane road.

Dindugal NH and theni NH are too narrow at certain points and has no scope for expansion. Probably an elevated road on top of the existing Madurai - bodi line from bye pass road till the NH ring road .

Of course , the simmakal stretch is a crucial one but Not sure why they chose Natham road instead of these NH .
Anyways hoping that these projects would kickstart soon unlike other projects which are only on papers till date .
Palanganatham to Kapallur is not NH.. Once new bypass road was built, NHAI exited all old NH.. In every other city, 4-laning was done by SG under SH dept.

Hope they are coming up with a visionary to develop an alternate road for the main thoroughfare (Melur Road). With extension of NH-785 from Madurai-Natham to Thuvarankurichi, the entire traffic from Chennai/Trichy can take this route to enter Madurai, which eventually will reduce the traffic in Melur Road and Mattuthavani area. And the NHAI has declared the Madurai Ring Road with numbering as NH-744A. With this Ring Road intersecting near Umachikulam, the traffic towards South can be diverted from here. Still it seems to be a better plan for Madurai.
Senthil,

This Madurai-Natham road is going to be a alternate road for traffic coming from Dindigul side too.. i.e. entire traffic coming from Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Bangalore can also use this Natham road as alternate road to enter Madurai city..

Dindigul-Kottampati connecting old NH7 to old NH45A is declared as NH and plans are there to make it as 4-lane road..

Dindigul to Madurai via Vadipatti is 67KM
Dindigul to Madurai via Natham is 73KM

With elevated highway going near to Vaigai river, entering Madurai city via this Natham would be a good option and time saver for vehicles coming from Dindigul side.

As you said if Natham to Thuvarankurichi is also converted to 4-lane road then it will be a perfect alternate road to Trichy, Chennai from Madurai..

Yes looks 2-lane with 1.5m shoulders. Saw a news 2000 crore allotted for Dindigul-Kottampaty NH upgradation.. but it could be error reporting.

Looking at the gvt website

Widening to 2 lane including 1.5 m paved shoulder of Dindigul-Natham-Kottampatti road of NH 383 -52.00KM - 340 crores

http://pibregional.nic.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1513052

Looks your wish is already fullfilled... reg extn of NH to Karaikudi & extn of Madurai-Natham highway to Thovarankurichi.

Overnight Natham became a 4-way NH junction..:)

NH-383 came out later in an unofficial announcement. And with Madurai Elevated Highway announcement, NH-785 came out.

New National Highways in TN as per the Gazette are as below. But no media coverage or announcement on this.
* NH-383 (Dindigul-Natham-Kottampatti)
* NH-383(Extn.) (Kottampatti-Thirupathur-Karaikudi)
* NH-785 (Madurai-Natham)
* NH-785 (Extn.) (Natham-Thovarankurichi)

Good to see this project work started without much noise. If completed would be 3rd longest elevated road in South India and longest in TN till Chennai Port expressway completes..!

Once Madurai ring road northern arm is completed, this Natham elevated road will divert the chunck of traffic coming from Dindigul, CBE, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Bangalore to Madurai city via ring road & Natham elevated road to reach much faster. Natham elevated road will be perfect alternate road to decongest Samayanallur to old bypass road.

But from where they got 22KM reduction?

It would reduce 7KM via Natham to Thuvarankurichi from Madurai compared via Melur. There might be close to 15-20min saving only if entire Natham to Thuvarankurichi is made into no u-turn or no cross traffic median opening between Madurai and Thuvarankurichi further north.
