SR4.5bn Makkah-Qassim highway gets green light

In this screenshot from Google map, the dashed line linking Buraidah, the capital of Qassim province, and the holy city of Makkah,
is just for illustration purposes. It’s not necessarily where the planned expressway would be built.

Thursday 17 July 2014

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has approved the allocation of SR4.5 billion to build an expressway between Qassim and Makkah with service facilities along the road.

Qassim Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar thanked Custodian of the Two House Mosques King Abdullah on behalf of the region’s people for the gesture, saying it reflects the king’s desire to enhance the welfare of citizens and residents in the country.

He said the new expressway would facilitate travel between the two regions, especially pilgrims traveling to Makkah to perform Haj and Umrah. “It will also strengthen the Kingdom’s road network.”

The new budget allocation comes less than a week after the king ordered the construction of another major highway linking the southern regions of Asir and Jazan at a cost of SR6 billion.

The two highways come under new road projects worth SR24 billion approved by King Abdullah to promote communication facilities in the Kingdom.

King Abdullah, meanwhile, ordered the Real Estate Development Fund to write off SR243 million owed by 1,158 citizens who have died.

“The fund has completed measures for the payment of their loans and lifted mortgages on their properties,” said Yousuf Al-Zoghaibi, director-general of the fund.

Status: All columns completed.

This project was put on hold at the start of 2011 as the residents in Sharai' and Sharai' Mujahideen expressed their dissatisfaction with the position of the interchange and demanded that it be shifted forward to where the current traffic signal is located. The project has been restarted this year.

On level 1, an underpass will be built from Makkah-bound Sail road to Omar Qadi street, the same underpass will also have an exit for a U-turn to get back on Sail Road in the opposite direction. On level 2, the Sail road will sit on top of the underpass, another bridge over the underpass will be built for the exit from Omar Qadi Street to Taif-bound Sail road. On level 3, A bridge will be built from Omar Qadi street to Makkah-bound Sail road.
Project Duration: 36 months.

On my visit I noticed that they are building columns for two bridges, whereas in the above render, there is one bridge and one underpass. So the actual design is different from the above render. I found this image of a possible new design for the interchange to connect it with the Makkah-Qassim Highway. The Madinah Newspaper article in which I found this image was about the Taif As-Sail Road-Hira Street intersection. So unfortunately the only details about this design are the ones in the image itself:
-

-
Clear and detailed design of the interchange based on the available renders with bridge numbering:
Red = Not started yet.
Yellow = U/C
Blue = Completed and Open for traffic.
Green = Proposed Link to Al-Qassim Highway.

Bridge #1.

Left-to-Right: Bridge #1 and Bridge #2.

Unfortunately I only found out about the new possible design after my visit, otherwise I would have gone to the northern side of the interchange to confirm the new design.
