So what's the difference between feeding it a puppy or a rat?

Man coats puppy in oil, feeds to snake

A man who coated a three-week-old puppy in cooking oil and then fed it to his pet boa constrictor has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years probation, US prosecutors said.

Joseph Beadle, 40, pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge in March. He has served 51 days of his jail sentence while the case was pending.

Beadle, of Glendale, Arizona, faced up to a year in jail on the charge.

Police reports said Beadle fed the mixed-breed puppy to the 2.5-metre-long snake last June as two 15-year-old boys watched.

He poured the cooking oil on the dog so it would be easier for the snake to swallow.

Investigators seized his snake after finding it was the victim of neglect.

"The County Attorneys Office has made prosecuting animal cruelty cases a high priority," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a statement.

"Experience and empirical evidence have shown that people who commit cruelty to animals are more likely to commit crimes against people."

And feeding it filthy dog? Save that for the chinese restaurants. Thats obviously animal abuse. But rats are ok, nobody likes rats. By the way - most snakes only eat live food so puppy or other animal, what's the difference?

He mistreated the snake ^^ so there is a reason to be punished, but if the puppy was not tortured/abused in any way and simply fed to the snake, then he really shouldn't be punished for animal cruelty to the puppy....

Yeh whats with that, you can feed it a mouse or rat, but feeding it a dog is somehow different? They are all domesticated animals are they not?

just for the record i think its a bit messed up feeding a live puppy to a snake (because its a puppy) but i'm going to play devils advocate and say that no where in the article does it describe how the man was cruel to the snake. if anything it makes the case for him being caring to the snake by oiling up the puppy to make the job easier for the snake. he's helping his pet snake out. if he's just being made a scapegoat for feeding it a puppy, coz it was a puppy and they are cute and mans best friend and all, it is a bit harsh. in nature, to the snake it is just another warm mammal.

Its hypocritical to say its wrong to use a puppy but ok to feed mice and rats.
Just because we, people, prefer dogs doesnt mean other animals not in our inner circle shouldnt have rights.

If, however, I was going to pick on it on a level that has some basis (other than puppies are cute mans best friend), The puppy is young. Do people feed baby rats and mice to snakes? Probably not often.

End of Arguement on my part.

Very true.

And yes, they do feed baby mice to snakes, the young pythons are fed what are called "pinkies" which are live baby mice, which have no fur, hence "pinkies".

Unfortunately snakes will not eat dead mamals, some get trained to eat dead ones that are warmed up (the handler will move it with tongs to entice the snake to grab it) which I have see on documentaries etc.
As cruel as it is, it's the way it is.

But those animals are pests. It is what the snake eats in the wild, not puppies.
Remember dogs are considered pests in a lot of countries as they attack farm animals, maul people etc. In a lot of Asian countries, dogs are still on the menu, aparently they make for good eating.
