Couldn't find a thread and we all love a good bridge (I know I do). Some fantastic bridges in Manchester, new and old.

Gonna start off with a proposal for Airport City by 5plus Architects.

What a welcome that boulevard is and I do love the bridge. Can't beat a bit of Corten steel.

Airport City Bridge
As part of our ongoing role as masterplan guardian for the ‘Airport City Manchester’ project we were commissioned to prepare proposals for a central bridge across the M56 motorway spur, providing a new footbridge connection between Airport and Airport City.

The new bridge will provide access for cyclists and pedestrians in neighbouring Wythenshawe and the wider area to the employment opportunities at the Airport.

The footbridge will also enhance the plausibility and deliverability of the early phases of the masterplan, driving early fundamental connections and informing the urban grain to be developed.

Great thread idea.

Has Airport City started construction yet?
Surely that can't be the final design for the bridge? It's supposed to provide access for cyclists but how's that supposed to work - do you cart them up the stairs?

Not to mention wheelchairs...

Is that a ramp off through the building?

Could be but it seems to end in mid-air. I thought it was just a reflection in the renderland glass.

Think there is a lift for the disabled. Might not be final design.
If you look carefully, there's a glass lift, hard to see because of the glass building next to it.
Not sure if this link will work*

Have always thought bridges like this are ripe for the kind of corporate sponsorship you see in the USA (imagine it freshly painted in red and yellow with a - hopefully discrete - acknowledgement of the support of Ronald McDonald...).

There's got to be a better way than letting them decay as they are.

I've always wondered why we couldn't build an additional two platforms on the Victoria station bridge, in particular here:

Either as part of Victoria or a small but independent station... Manchester Greengate anyone? Or perhaps Manchester Mirabel Street...

Would certainly be useful for preventing terminating trains from blocking the through platforms at Victoria

Well, just sometimes, dreams do come true -
As a small boy, over seventy years ago, a bus ride into town from Prestwich, nearly always seemed to end in passing under the North Bridge at the bottom of Great Ducie Street - it was a depressing site then, it was a more depressing sight in the 60's on my way in to University & later to work.
It was a relief to get a job in Bolton & then in Altrincham but, no matter how long the interlude, how infrequent the journey, this gateway into Manchester only ever seemed to sink deeper into despair & decay but now, at long, long last, comes riding to the rescue a knight in the unlikely armour of Network Rail, seeking Listed Building Consent for the repair & refurbishment of the North Bridge, spanning Victoria Street/Great Ducie Street!

This is what it looks like now-

This is what they propose- (apologies for the orientation, l can't get it to revolve, so you may have to lie down to get the full affect!)

Do hope after all this time that we're going to see this bridge, in all its glory: at last a truly triumphal & fitting northern gateway into the City.

Amazing what a good nights sleep can do -

Let's hope that this is only the first example of a comprehensive bridge/viaduct refurbishment programme.

Great news Jabez.. I do hope they're doing the other two bridges in the sequence of three (and the other ones to the side over the river)? It would seem inconceivable not to, but it's been such a long time coming as you bore witness, that I'm taking nothing fit granted until it's done. Will tie in nicely with the Medical Qtr, Chetham's works that are ongoing!

^^darn predictive text, or perhaps that lunchtime pint in the Mackie Mayor.... , though yes, it could easily be Apotheca's sister bar..... Can't have enough quarters..... 'Medieval' Quarter of course what I intended to type..... Whilst I'm on the subject, the Cathedral tower is now wrapped in scaffolding, presumably ready for the changes so that you can go to the top, as a tourist attraction.

There's a planning app for each of the three spans :)

Can't see anything for the span over the river mind

Thanks Civstu! ^^ I’ll take that, surely the other bridges will look so bad next to the refurbed ones that they'll have to be done, especially with 100 Embankment due to rise soon.....
Just a random thought but this seems the place. The bridge over the Irwell at the bottom of Quay Street, just before the ring road. They should cover it in lights, like the bridge from Chelsea over to Battersea, or Amsterdam style. Would look great

Thinking about it, to carry out work on the span over the river will surely require the approval of both Manchester & Salford Councils as the centre of the Irwell, at this point, will mark the boundary between them.
Working over the river will be a more complicated & expensive task than over the highway.
Let's hope Network Rail have this in hand
I know the etiquette isn't to link to other forums, but I've just read fascinating thread on 28dayslater about bridges that predate the construction of Victoria Station. These still exist, crossing the Irk within the culvert under the station!
