I guess they can't air anime on TV over there (given the strict restrictions and regulations on TV content over there in the GCC and Middle East).

Well you're both right and wrong about that. Most countries in the MENA region don't have such restrictions, the exception is largely the GCC.

But since many major TV-networking companies are owned by/based in gulf countries you do get censorship in many animes across MENA.

I dare say that there was less censorship if we go a couple of decades back. Anime was introduced and consumed by the Arab world much earlier than the west actually. It was a regular thing already back in the 70's, while I would argue that in the US it didn't become mainstream until Dragon Ball and especially Pokemon(late 80's - early 90's).

I guess to each his own. I personally could never understand the attraction to cliche'd shonen main characters. The typically loud, stupid, hungry and overpowered ones.
