One of the major infrastructure projects by the University for its Neo-centennial celebration is dedicated to its alumni. The Thomasian Alumni Center and Hostel is a testament that UST welcomes former students with open arms even years, if not decades, since their graduation.

The project began as a simple design competition, sponsored by architectural firm Aidea among Thomasian architecture students three years ago. The idea was to design a structure that would accommodate all alumni-related events and affairs. The site was to be located at the site of the old UST gym. It was envisioned to be the biggest of its kind by the time it was completed.

Among hundreds of proposed designs, the prototype of the group composed of Christian Darby Santos, Jesi Ling, and Weinard Tan stood out.

In addition, Aidea planned the building to accommodate vertical expansion, in case more spaces will be required in the future.

“The structures are designed to carry an additional 6 floors,” Tolentino said.

The proposed site is the current location of UST's original gymnasium, which was the largest in the Philippines when it was built. Given its historic importance to UST, the gym's front and rear façade will be kept and the entrance of the alumni center will be placed along Tamayo Drive.

The alumni center will have five floors and a mezzanine.

First Floor: Ground Floor will feature a grand lobby that would serve as the center's main converging point. A souvenir shop, business center, coffee shop, and travel bureau will all be located on this floor. There will also be a Mezzanine where the Thomasian Honor Gallery will be placed.

Second Floor: The center's Grand Ballroom will be located on the Second Floor for homecoming and other events could be held.

Third Floor: The Third Floor will be the location of the Office for Alumni Affairs and the offices of each Faculty/College-based alumni associations. There will also be meeting rooms on this floor.

Fourth Floor: The Fourth Floor will feature function rooms for smaller events and seminars.

Fifth Floor: Lastly, the Fifth Floor will have hostel facilities for accommodation services for traveling and returning alumni. This floor will also have a spa and wellness center.

I think this will be more than 5 floors. As for the architectural conservation, let's see how that puny retained entrance would look like in relation to the multilevel addition.

I mean, they are following the height standard of the UST MAIN BUILDING, the one with the neo-classical design with a bell tower ata, not so sure (needs to review my humanities, hehe). So walang new building and dapat ipatayo na lalagpas sa height ng MAIN BUILDING na ito.

UPDATES

“Prior to the Alumni (Center) is ‘yung Beato (Angelico) building [ang mas mataas kaysa Main Building] na umabot ng walong palapag…
