The worst ferry collision to occur in Sydney for some time
involving the Manly ferry "Narrabeen" occuring at Circular Quay today.

We were going too bloody fast: ferry passenger

A 29-year-old American tourist is in hospital with cuts to her face after a Manly ferry with about 180 people on board hit a wharf at Sydney's Circular Quay.

An investigation is now underway and commuters are likely to experience delays tonight, say Sydney Ferries.

Frank Crook, a 2GB journalist who was on the ferry shortly after noon, said it was going ``bloody fast'' as it approached the wharf.

He was first alerted to a problem when the ferry - the Narrabeen - blew its fog horn repeatedly for about 40 seconds.

Then, about 30 metres from the end of Wharf 5, there was a call for passengers to hang on, he said.

``We were going too bloody fast and next thing one of the crew came racing (past), yelling on the top of voice: `Just hang on, hang on, hang on', to the people sitting on board.''

Mr Crook said there was not much to hold on to and he just hoped he would not ``get hurled the length of the boat''.

But the collision with the Wharf was not too bad, he said.

``We hit quite gently. It seemed to be cushioned,'' Mr Crook said.``It was a bit of an adventure.''

The ferry has been tied up for a damage assessment and the damaged Wharf 5 will remain closed until further notice.

The cause of the accident has yet to be established.

The office of Transport Safety Investigations and the NSW Maritime Authority are investigating the matter.

Sydney Ferries has issued the following service arrangements until further notice:

Mosman, Taronga Zoo and Manly JetCat services will operate from Wharf 2.
Manly ferry services will operate from Wharf 3.
All other services will operate from Wharf 4.
A JetCat will replace some Manly ferry services.

Call me inquisitive, but how on earth could the Narrabeen even fit into Wharf 5? Freshwater class ferries can only use 3A and 3B as far as I know.

I'm sure it had a mechanical problem which caused the ferry to lose control as it approached wharf 3, forcing it to veer off course into wharf 5.

It's not the first incident. The Narrabeen lost control while coming into dock at Manly Wharf in September 1984 and ended up beaching itself on the beach at Manly Cove, damaging the sharknet in the process. There have also been several incidents involving other Freshwater Class ferries particularly the Freshwater which also has had problems coming into dock.
