Work on Mansehra airport to start soon: Yousuf

ISLAMABAD
Federal Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Yousuf has said work on mega projects, including construction of an airport in Mansehra, will soon be started.
In a statement on Sunday, he said location for construction of an airport has been identified in Tanawal area and a team of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has declared the proposed project technically and financially viable after visiting the area in February.
The minister said he and MNA Capt (r) Safdar have visited the location as the federal government was taking keen interest in the uplift of the entire Hazara region.
Land acquisition process for the proposed airport will begin within a month or so which would generate employment opportunities in the scenic but underdeveloped Tanawal area, the minister added.
The minister said the project will play a vital role in promoting tourism and facilitate both local and foreign tourists to find a pleasant destination in the peaceful area.
The minister said citizens of six districts of Hazara division are employed in large numbers in the Middle East and the airport will provide them immediate access to their homes as well.
He said federal government has been spending Rs450 million on laying the new pipeline of wide diameter from Abbottabad to Mansehra. Once work on pipeline is completed, natural gas would also be supplied to Shinkiari, New Balakot City and other areas that have been deprived of gas so far, he added.
The Motorway project, another mega project as announced by the prime minister, is also well underway and will be formally inaugurated this month while three lanes Burhan-Mansehra expressway project has been duly converted into a four-lane motorway, the minister added

Govt approves location for airport in Mansehra
ABBOTTABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led federal government has approved the location and construction of an airport in Tanawal area and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has declared the proposed project technically and financially viable.

The airport will complement the proposed dry port and facilitate Pak-China trade to a great extent. The project will generate employment opportunities in the Tanawal area, which is scenic but underdeveloped.

The sources said that initially Pakkal valley of Mansehra was proposed but wiser thinking prevailed to save the already shrinking valuable agricultural land. “The citizens of six districts of Hazara division are employed in large numbers in the Middle East and the airport will provide them immediate access to their homes,” said an official.

The sources disclosed that a team from the CAA visited the area and observed all aspects of the proposed airport including financial viability. The team, according to sources, visited the area on the directive of the prime minister and the final report has been submitted to the Prime Minister’s office.

According to local sources, the tract begins from Lassa Nawab onwards and is sufficient to meet requirements of the land availability. It has been learnt that land acquisition process will begin within a month or so and the project has been accorded high priority.

The area of the proposed airport lies within the constituency of Member National Assembly from Mansehra, Capt (r) Muhammad Safdar, who is son-in-law of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and has been taking a keen interest in the uplift of the entire Hazara region.

When contacted by this correspondent, Muhammad Safdar stated that this is one of the major projects announced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his pre-election public meeting at Mansehra. He further said that funds have been allocated for the project in Mansehra and confirmed that the CAA team had declared the project feasible.

Replying to a question, he declared that trade with China through the Northern Areas would be greatly facilitated and economy boosted and poverty level reduced. He said over 4,000 jobs would be created due to the project. He claimed that with this project, tourism would be facilitated and both local and foreign tourists would find a pleasant destination in the peaceful area.

Muhammad Safdar stated that the Motorway Project, another mega project as announced by the prime minister, is also well underway and will be formally inaugurated in the second week of March 2014.

He said three lanes Burhan-Mansehra expressway project funded by the Asian Bank has been duly converted into a four-lane motorway and funds have been made available by the federal government.

Islamabad-Mansehra distance is like Islamabad-Peshawar.

Also there will most likely be a Hazara Province, so good decision.

Well honestly, there was no point of building a huge airport in Islamabad if they are going to build airports in Mansehra and Mirpur, i'd say around 60% of traffic at ISB airport comes from these regions and surroundings.
I have relatives in mansehra, and I wish the train ran upto there, that would be more useful for the community there than airport, imho.

However, any improvement is good, I guess.

Good news. Mansehra is a good destination for airport because of many factors like:
-- Large population of the area
-- Many ppl employed in karachi and overseas
-- Distance from nearest airports; almost 3 hours from pindi and peshawer
-- Gateway to scenic tourist attractions like Kaghan valley, Saran Valley, Shinkiari etc

Hazara division is the vote bank of PML-N. High speed rail between NIIA and Mansera a better option.

Not a bad idea, 48 km to the east is Muzaffarabad (ie. British Pakistanis of Kashmiri decent). Although this will probably be an airstrip at best, but better than nothing.

muzaffaraabad and mansehra do not connect by land.
Any development should be welcome. It'll at least ease off the load on New Islamabad International Airport as well as will serve the most major parts of KPK.

They do..via garhi habib Ullah.
For people of AJK, Islamabad is a good option, and if someone wants then Sialkot is another option which is closer to Mirpur and surrounding area.
