One hundred mass transit buses were commissioned yesterday in Benin City by the Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
Mr. Oshiomole said the buses project, which was financed by Skye Bank, is a fulfillment of his promise of November 17, 2009, during his budget presentation.
The unwarranted stress the citizens of Edo State, particularly women and young children, pass through in their quest for transportation across Benin metropolis, the governor claimed, motivated him to procure the buses.
“Many of the troubles encountered in the commercial buses called ‘Tuke-tuke’, most of which are old and overloaded, can now be avoided. Even most of you car owners can as well keep your cars at home and take a ride in one of our buses,” he said.
Mr. Oshiomhole revealed that part of the deal with the manufacturers of the buses is the assurance of availability of spare parts for them. He also asked the management of the company, Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), to take full responsibility of operating the scheme, assuring them of non-interference in the affairs of the company from the government, just as he pointed out that the duty of the board was in policy formulation.
Lucas Okojie, the state commissioner for transport, said the procurement of the new Daewoo buses represents a major effort by the government to ease the challenges of urban transportation.
The managing director of Edo City Transport Limited, Edugie Agbonlahor, described the commissioning as a landmark, adding, “Edo State has become a reference point and a benchmark for assessing government high profile achievements.”
She said a business plan has been put in place, and a city-wide strategy made up of well conceptualized routes plan has been adopted.
