What is the difference between Metro Express and Tramway ?
The Metro Express is simply a name given to the project...the real thing itself will be a combination of a fast tram with some modifications and adaptations with respect to the terrain and location.

The metro line will start in the town of Curepipe, in the center of the island, travel through 19 stations (including 4 major transit centers) to finally reach Port Louis, the capital city. Commuting time will be around 40 mins.

Some buildings and structures will be demolished. Prep work will take at least 3 months, according to the Road Development Authority, the government body in charge of the work.

The Metro Express system will comprise of 30 trams operating at 3 minutes interval

METRO EXPRESS: 30 WAGONS AT THREE MINUTES INTERVAL

(Pictured above is the Delhi Metro in India which will serve as model for the Metro Express network in Mauritius)

One week from the laying ceremony of the foundation stone of the Metro Express, we know a little more about the technical details around the operation of this new type of transport which aims to smooth traffic on our road network.

The Metro Express is being revealed little by little. Several technical aspects of this project have already been finalized. This is what we learn from sources who participated in the supervision of the Metro Express. One of the highlights is the number of trains that will be put on the road. It was decided that 30 trains will be on track to ensure the daily journey between Curepipe and Port Louis.

"A fleet of 30 trains will give us a good margin of maneuver to reach our main objective of ensuring that there is a maximum of three minutes between each departure between the station of Port Louis and that of Curepipe, "A source told the government hotel.

Another highlight of the project is the acquisition by the state of a land of a little more than ten arpents in the area of Richelieu, in the vicinity of the prison. This site will accommodate the depot of the trains as well as a control building to supervise the distance of the trains from a distance.

"This building will also house the trains and it is in this same building that the maintenance work will be carried out," a source at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure told us. The employees who will be called upon to handle the equipment of this depot will have to undergo training. "This is a new experience for the country because we have no one who knows how to handle trains. We will have to go through an assiduous training, "explains our interlocutor.

The first picks will be given on March 10 at the old train depot located next to the Caudan Waterfront. An official ceremony will be held to commemorate this launch, which will host Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth as a guest of honor. It is only after the exercise of contract allocation that we will see the opening of large construction sites between Port Louis and Curepipe. However, the government will begin preliminary work to clear the ground.

The decision to demolish three buildings not far from the old train depot has already been taken. The process for the exercise of contract allocation is phased out between two Indian companies: Afcons and Larsen and Toubro. Both companies have many years of experience in the transportation sector.

various schemes for route you can see across the web. NONE is official.

has there even been a release for an actual official route ? I don't believe so even if the first stone ceremony occurred in March 12th for Independence day.

And it is no surprise since a vast number of eviction notices haven't been executed yet.

Does anyone even know if the route up will go by Pailles or by Richelieu sector ? The press seems to be talking about eviction notices in both sectors ! ( La butte in this one https://www.lexpress.mu/article/303920/sursis-pour-deracines-metro-express )

There has been no final 'official' release of course but this is the only one we got now.

And, I don't think there will be any modification of the route at this stage. In the eventuality of having to bring any change, it will be highly minimal.

A substantial modification or re-alignment will imply additional costs not to mention re-designing and other re-engineering works. According to a statement released a few days back, the contract for the construction will be awarded in about a week, which leaves no time for major changes.

However, it's quite weird that eviction notices have been sent only now. Apparently there will be a meeting today with some of the residents who received the notices.

By Rachita Prasad

MUMBAI: Larsen & Toubro has bagged an order worth Rs 3,375 crore to build a metro rail project for the government of Mauritius, the engineering major said on Wednesday.

L&T has been upbeat on metro rail projects and is already executing projects in Riyadh and Doha, and 17 locations in India. On Wednesday, ET reported that the company is close to winning orders for two packages worth a total of Rs 1,300 crore as a part of Mumbai Metro Line 4.

"This order is perfectly in sync with our strategy to expand L&T's railways business into markets beyond India and we are extremely happy to have found a foothold in the African continent," Rajeev Jyoti, the chief executive officer of the railways business at L&T, was quoted as saying in a statement.

The Mauritius project entails designing and building of an integrated light rail-based urban transit system over a 26 km route connecting Curepipe to Immigration Square in Port Louis. L&T would build 19 stations, including two elevated stations.

L&T bagged the projects through competitive bidding route. The project will be fully funded through an India government grant and line of credit.

"Although the project is scheduled to be completed in 48 months, L&T commits to complete and deliver a priority section of 13 km in 24 months," the company said.

Preliminary works for the project have started on the 11th of September.

Land is being cleared at Riche Lieu in the center of the way. Riche Lieu is where the main depot for the train system will be built.

Geo-technical tests are being carried out simultaneously along other sections of the line.
