Its time for a thread on the really tall skyscrapers & towers that are either uc or planned.
Ive chosen 500m or half a kilometre as new benchmark. 300m seems to be an easy height to achieve these days with now 100s of bldgs/towers uc or planned around the globe./

In 2008, we have just 1 megatall skyscraper being the 509m Taipei 101.
Also we have 2 towers being 553m CN Tower & 540m Ostankino Tower.

thread links to megatalls

Good thread Culwulla - just what I was looking for. No mention of the other 3 behemoths planned for Arabia - Al Burj, Mile High & City of Silk though? I thought AB & MH were both approved despite the lack of final designs in the public domain (despite Sky Towers best efforts ;) )

Isn't this the low-rise section?
It's very hard to get a straight answer on the tower part of this project which would indicate that it isn't happening (yet). Llike some others when the low-rise is being built the thread is titled "Under Construction", which gives the misleading impression that the tower itself is UC, when it's not.

^but they are "underconstruction". they have moved from being approved with the site being prepared for a skyscraper .im not going into prep stage or demolition. im simplfying it s status, its either moving forward or still a drawing in an architects office.

^yes ,back in 1996 when 452m Petronas Towers were completed, the CTBUH decided to make up dif catorgories towards heights. Sears tower was 442m but had 80m spires that didnt count because they were antennea. Petronas was about 400m without its spires but because they were intricate to there design they became part of its overall height.
So yes, any building that has a spire which is intricate to its design, is counted as its height. In other words, imagine the bldg without its spire. if it looks incomplete, then it should have its spire as its height- eg Chrysler Building.
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is an organisation in US who decides buildings heights

Another good example is the Empire State Building.....Its mast is integral to its design and see the top of the mast as the official height of the building ( Where King Kong fought the biplanes ) but the tall antenna mounted on top is not counted except as overall height. I wonder if the masts above Sears and John Hancock towers in Chicago didn't have antenna's attached whether they would be accepted as part of the design? The JH in particular looks like the twin masts are part of it's profile?....These masts are similar construction to the mast above Sydney Tower.

yes, ive always seen ESB as 449m not 381m. i think its antenna should be counted. also with John hancock. its twin spires are part of its design. would look wierd without it. maybe same for sears?

Well, I've always believed the opposite. Spires, attenas, masts simply do not count, because they do not serve a functional or habitual purpose, and hence I prefer to count buildings to roof. Thus Eureka wins over Q1!

I agree with mk, especially in towers with 50m+ spires that serve no purpose. If anything antennas should be counted over spires, as they actually do something.
