60-Km Bridge Across Melaka Strait Proposed
Updated : 18-04-2006

MELAKA, April 18 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government Tuesday suggested the construction of a 60-km bridge linking Melaka to Dumai in Sumatra, Indonesia following the cancellation of the scenic bridge that links with Singapore.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the project was estimated to cost between RM1 billion and RM2 billion.

It would have greater economic potential because the Sumatra population had reached 70 million compared to Singapore with only four million, he told reporters here.

Earlier, he attended a briefing and had a dialogue with Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at Seri Negeri.

Mohd Ali said the Melaka-Dumai bridge had been pondered over when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the prime minister.

"It was mulled in 1995 or 1996 but died down because of the financial crisis hitting hard both countries in 1997," he said.

He said the the project could be undertaken by the governments or the private sector.

Mohd Ali said he had conveyed the proposal to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last Saturday when attending the Negeri Sembilan and Johor Umno Divisions Leadership Course at a civics camp in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan.

"I believe the bridge can boost the tourism and trade sectors between the two countries," he said.

The scenic bridge to replace the Johor Causeway was called off by the Prime Minister for the best interest of the nation.

:eek:hno: Another silly and grandoise project like the Crooked/Scenic Bridge. In fact this is worst!
^^ yup.. i rather them spend the money on a better ferry system that travels to all the ports in the straits city or island than 'Bridges'..
Why would they want to build a 60 km bridge across the world's busiest strait...who knows during hazy days ships cant even see the bridge and a disaster is waiting to happen...
What a stupid idea... why not build a bridge linking Johor to Sarawak or Sabah to Kota Bahru...? :p
Wonder how some ppl could be so silly. Stupid comments coming from people befitting their status. I almost choked myself silly when I read that. :)
I want a bridge from Penang to Kuching :D

I don't get these crazy wackos now all obssessed with building a bridge for no f***ing purpose. Trying to proof what?

Why don't we just build a bridge from johor and penang to the moon?
That'd be under the 11th M'sia plan

OK...i know i am more becoming one of the supporter of grandiose projects...but maybe in the future a tunnel could be built linking West and East Malaysia...kinda like EuroTunnel in Europe
How about Malaysia linking London /New York?
60km bridge, what other bridges in the world are that long? I've heard of 30km and 40km but 60km, not yet.
Anything to get into the Malaysian Book of Records.
Ridiculous...................1 billion just for bridge which hardly can see the purpose.......hmmmmm
Money would be better spent to upgrade some bridges in Malaysian small towns and rural areas. Even if Dumai is a part of Malaysia, it'll be quite risky and I think it will actually cost way more than 1 billion.
a 60km bridge? better they use the money to built another North-South Highway!
