mental complex among the Taiwanese people?

399 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Pangu
From my intensive(?) experience in surfing Taiwanese online forums, I found that the Taiwanese(at least the majority) often complain about themselves or their country being "bad". They have been saying the behaviour of the Taiwanese people has been the worst in the world, and such statement is usually based on only a little spark...usually from news stories reporting the negative images of the Taiwanese society. For example, if a teacher was beaten to death by a teenage student, and the story appeared on the Taiwanese media, then the people would probably started saying "Oh Taiwan is finished" "Taiwan has no future" things like that. Does "a teacher is beaten to death by a student" equal "the Taiwanese society is goddamn finished"?

On the other hand, I also found many Taiwanese at the same time, showing their (hidden) superiority over their cross-strait counterparts. If today there's a news saying people got killed by mass food-poisoning in mainland China, then instead of saying "Taiwan is finished" as described earlier, people in Taiwan would probably started saying "God it's so lucky to live in Taiwan" "stupid Chinese...making their country like a hell" "Taiwan's great!" things like that. So, "Taiwan's finished" and "Taiwan's great" at the same time huh.........?!

Well...I'm kinda losing my point but.....I just like to hear some comments on the two extreme sides of the Taiwanese psychology. It's kinda like people in Japan are extremely polite on the outside but can also get extremely hentai on the inside. Same thing in Taiwan?

I'm not sure of the scale of this problem, but this issue exists and I experience it all the time.

As a Hong Konger, I've seen all kinds of attitudes from Taiwanese. I've seen very benevolent and diplomatic persons who understand differing opinions, but I've also seen aggressive and violent people who would impose their inferiority complex onto, say, mainland Chinese. There are also the pessimists who keep telling me "Taiwan is finished, we have no hope."

This divide is unfortunate but in Taiwan's situation, it's expected. Taiwan is constantly in fear of China's perceived aggression. Some will understand, some will not. Some who have lost hope will just sit and wait. It's similar to the voting patterns.

Here's a simpler way to put it, according to a forum post that I read: Given Taiwan's situation, it's normal for some to "shake their dick" at mainland China. It's absolutely fun for them, although completely useless. It only fuels their mentality of being "superior" and doesn't really convince anyone else.

I found a way to put it short.....feeling superior but at the same time completely lacking self-confidence.

It's not just in the political field but nearly everything.
Here's another example. Many of them are proud of their entertainment industry playing an important part in the East Asian sphere, but they also like to bash themselves and they do this by comparing them with the Japanese celebraties to show how pathetic some Taiwanese celebraties are.
I understand the diversity of their opinions towards something, but they often tend to be extreme.

Psychologically speaking, those two go hand-in-hand. Because someone feels inherently inferior, they have a desire to convince themselves and others that they are actually "superior" and worth people's attention. Who they can convince depends on the level of tact and logic displayed.

After all, why feel the need to be superior if you're perfectly confident and content with yourself and your identity?

ditto superchan.

confident ppl don't need to "feel" superior by proving it. confident ppl knows deep down that they might have a good personality, or get good stuff out of life, or are happy, or are good looking etc.

no need to go on the internet to "prove" to others your ethnicity or race is superior.

I agree with that theoretically.

However, as most of us should know, theories usually don't work out in reality, as much as they may make sense. *cough* communism *cough*

If you have ever played the role of a leader (successfully) be it being a manager, business owner, camp leader... etc. even if you are confident on the inside, you must also show it on the outside.

Unfortunately, majority of the world isn't nearly close to being as civilized as most of our parents have brought us up to be. Why do you think many of the REALLY rich and successful people don't necessarily have Ph.D.s while many are even high school or college drop outs. Yes there are numerous surveys that prove people with higher education tend to earn more, but those are people who earn a salary, working for others, not necessarily entrepreneurs or business owners. When it comes down to it, the human society is all about image and perception.

easy...
if you follow the news media in taiwan, unfortunately, they are mostly negative...
why? don't you think that there is a reason for these media in taiwan being called "unifying media"?
most of these media are funded by chinese government directly or indirectly.
and many of them are also associated with kmt.
then, do you think that these media are going to give any easy time for taiwanese people or taiwanese government...?
of course making everything negative will be benificial for both kmt and chinese government.
while all the media are brain washing people with all these negative news, of course taiwanese people will be very negative toward themself.
these media not only mostly report negative news about taiwan, they also mostly report positive news about china.
while china is clearly an enemy nation for taiwan, any taiwanese people would be fed up about seeing mostly good news about china while mostly bad news about taiwan, and then of course, like you said, once something bad happened in china, taiwanese people would laugh at it... it's all resulted of the unbalanced report of the unifying media...

There are a lot of products made in mainland China in Taiwan. But Taiwan business men often label these products with "Made in Hong Kong", "Made in Japan". "Made in Taiwan", so that those stupid buyers can feel good.

Arrogant, dishonest, self-deceiving, and superiority-inferioty complex schizoid!

i've heard whatever massacre happened in nanjing... was actually done by kmt themself...
I have also heard that your mother was a pig and your father was a mouse. The ugly mouse fucked the fat big with its sharp head and then the fat pig gave the birth of an exotic animal.

Yes, we need to slaughter this bastardized animal to prevent it from biting people.
