Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI, Tokyo, Japan) has launched the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ), a next-generation regional jetliner to be built by Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp., a new company established by MHI. Mitsubishi Aircraft will be responsible for various key activities in the MRJ project, including design, acquisition of type certification, procurement, sales and customer support. MHI’s Nagoya Aerospace Systems Works (Nagoya, Japan) will manufacture prototype aircraft and production models and will be in charge of the MRJ’s flight testing.

MHI says the MRJ, a 70-90 seat class regional jet, will be the first regional jet to adopt composite materials for its wings and vertical fins on a significant scale. The extensive use of composites, new engines and an “advanced” aerodynamic design are expected to reduce both fuel consumption and owner operating costs. The plane is expected to enter into service in 2013.
