Miami-Dade police have arrested a walking vendor at Hard Rock Stadium after he was found to have charged a fan $724 (£591/€663) for two beers during Sunday’s NFL American football game between the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers.

Nathaniel Collier was found to have used a personal card reader, and not the device issued to stadium vendors, when taking payment from the fan. Following the transaction, the fan received notification from his bank of an unusually large payment, which also displayed the name of the vendor, alerting him to the scam.

Collier, who now faces charges of grand theft and using a skimming device, was not employed by either the Dolphins or Hard Rock Stadium. Centerplate, which manages the stadium’s concessions, said he was instead hired by Rocket Man, a Kentucky-based subcontractor that employs walking vendors at major sporting events and concerts.

The fan has received a full refund. Rocket Man said in a statement issued to the Miami Herald newspaper: “As the chosen provider of walking vendors across dozens of stadiums, we take the matter of security extremely seriously, and train and monitor our vendors to safeguard our customers.

“Our onsite supervisor contacted the authorities immediately upon learning of the overcharge on what was Mr. Collier’s unauthorised personal device.”

After seeing the success of the NFL in London it was only a matter of time before one of the big 5 domestic soccer leagues in Europe would go about staging an in-season match in the US. Excited to see where this goes!

Miami Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel announced via Twitter today that gondolas are coming to Hard Rock Stadium and if you go to the games, you should be thrilled with the new way into the stadium.

It is unclear where the gondolas will run from and exactly where the drop off spot will be but we have to assume that if they are putting in this kind of money, it has to be transportation from the far lots to somewhere nearer the stadium. It most certainly will not be a long ride.

The Dolphins have already put in pedestrian bridges that ease traffic congestion due to fans walking across the road to the far lots. There have been rumored discussions about potential “tunnels” that would provide more ease of egress from games.

Now comes word that the gondolas will also be in play.

So, sorry for being a day late, but the Chiefs and 49ers punched their tickets to Super Bowl LIV.

Anybody making their bets on who's hoisting Lombardi? (I'm rooting for the Niners.)
