Miami Jai Alai

Does anyone have any vintage pictures of the fronton from it's early days? How many on the forum attend or used to attend the games? My father used to be into it when it was big in the 70's, and I played amateur Jai Alai in Orlando for a number of years in the 90's.

At Miami, my favorite players were Michelina and Ellorio.

Also any pictures of the Daytona Fronton would be great to see, before it's demise when it was burned down.

Didn't the Orlando fronton catch on fire at some point too? Lived relatively close to that one, but never made it inside. Maybe I'm imagining that. There was a strip club across the street and on the marquee one day there was an ad for Marsha Mallow - 400 lbs of fluff. Anyway...

I went into Miami once. Actually went to place some bets on the Kentucky Derby. Took a look around and left after a short while. It was pretty depressing.

MANY years ago I used to go to Miami Jai-Alai semi-frequently (and did some underage betting there, too...they never checked!)

It was still something of a draw back then but agreed with Brickell that after the crowds dried up it became a pretty depressing atmosphere.

I know there were frontons all the way up into New England years ago but I imagine most have gone by the wayside.

It IS a fun sport to watch even if the matches themselves were probably fixed.

Definitely fixed, as an amateur on the court, I eventually became pretty good, just couldn't "rebote" very well, at least not forehand. Backhand I was very strong and if the ball came to me on the wood, forehand throws I could hit the front wall just right so if you didn't "ide" the ball it would split the angle at the back wall and floor and roll off the back wall, called a "chula".

I was asking about Miami because it's still one of the few in the state with year round play.

But as far as fixing goes, in order to spread the trifecta pool equally for a while and then get enough money for the house an odd ball number would come in once and a while with only a couple ticket holders, one of which was always the player's coach, no doubt. 80% of the games were "fixed" in a way that basically said, "ok you stay out of this one" to some of the best players. Other than that they let them play. Even when it looks like an easy catch, sometimes the ball moving slow will mess with your thinking and you just drop it off the tip of the cesta.

Old pic of the good days....

I played poker a few times at Dania and watched a few Jai Alai games and tried to figure the game out. Looked to be basically the same as racketball but I never got into it.

That anti-casino propaganda film posted on the Resorts World thread had some video clips of Jai Alai going on. I don't remember the exact time in the video but it is there.

Ah, but they were just called "Starship" when that song was written. (1985).

They were the greatest when they were "Jefferson" (Airplane/Starship).

My favorite song of all time has to be Winds of Change.

IS that the same "Wooden Ships" that CSN did?

Gracies voice is super high pitched in that song! Never heard it before...never knew they covered CSN... Although I have to tell you I still like the original better.

The original was written in Fort Lauderdale, about a boat up there.

There was a Miami Vice Jai-Alai episode that was really good. I don't know if anyone remembers or seen it.

Awesome find, Brickell.... the whole episode... one of my favorites too, the music in that show alone made it great.

I'd like to see them improve this area as there as been some with Pinnacle condos and the metrorail running through here.

Wasn't this area about a year ago made part of the City of Miami, I can't think of the name of this part of town, seems like it started with an M, Monroe or Melrose ?
