Middlesbrough Area - STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

With demand for student accommodation providing major impetus for the regeneration of the town, it's time for a dedicated thread. There are certainly enough proposed schemes and developments in the offing to keep this one active.

I'll kick things off with the conversion of St James House on Albert Road:

Any news on the student development next to The Swatters Carr pub yet ,as the hoardings around it say ready in 2018 ,has it stalled or something ?

^^

The applicant only sought outline planning permission. They would have to follow that up with a fully detailed proposal before work could commence.

The same developer is behind the ongoing restoration of 1 Albert Terrace. The hoardings there were advertising a completion date of Autumn 2016. Their target dates are either aspiring or unrealistic.

A bit of a write up on the former Lloyds Bank Building. It sounds fancy - and enterprising...

Middlesbrough entrepreneurs invest in former Lloyds Bank site in student accommodation transformation

Twin entrepreneurs from Middlesbrough are investing in their hometown in a project set to be the pair’s biggest yet.

At the age of 19, Jack and Tom Atha established Teesside-based Atha Developments, have chosen a former bank as the site of their new “luxury student accommodation”, St James Studios.

Jack and Tom's father is Charles Atha, of Atha & Co Solicitors.

Here's an update on St James House. I'm back to utilizing a rooftop car park again, the Cleveland Centre this time:

The brickwork alterations for the larger windows are just about visible through the debris netting:

Yeah, there's lot of good vantage points around there. It's difficult to pick one.

But you know what they say, choose the one you know...

It's going to look posh. Great location too - hopefully boost the shops and cafes around there.

Baker Street Kitchen and Bedford Street were busy Monday lunchtime. Plenty of people enjoying their food and drink in the sunshine. A good summer would help boost business along with the extra numbers that developments like St James should bring.

I noticed Atha & Co. has moved / is moving into St. James House (signs up), which I guess makes sense considering the owner's children did it up.
I saw that today. Initially thought it might just be some free advertising, but the ground floor is dedicated office space.

Well, this came out of nowhere.

Application gone in for a 300 bed six story student apartment block on a car park, bounded by Woodlands Road, Southfield Road, Fern Street and Clarendon Road. Not a bad little design:

Ref: 18/0798/FUL

Nice to see a bit of corten steel...

Well, the Uni did promise the car parks wouldn't be permanent, so this is promising.

Interesting proposal. Teesside Uni themselves proposing the scheme.

It begs the question is this further to the proposed student village or instead of.

Quite a big development ,I think I saw on the University’s future development plan it was planned for student apartments on Woodlands Road so I guess this is in addition to the student village planned at the back of Borough Road

Teesside University's plans have always been for two student villages.

They're plotting to level Woodlands Road and all surrounding 'modern' buildings (1960s+) and replace them with something more modern and efficient. It's clear to me that this new development is a part of the Woodlands road scheme.

It appears that they're also pressing ahead with the Gresham scheme having bought the land off the council earlier this year. However, with all the properties in the block on the Linthorpe Road side fully occupied, the University still has a fight on its hands to purchase them and demolish a few. The occupants all made it abundantly clear that they aren't moving, with six only moving in, in the last six months. Not to mention the scattering of properties in Gresham that need to be demolished but, knowing a few, they also refuse to move. Gresham is one of those things where the University must compromise.

There's no point in alienating residents for a future proposal. The entire city must be onboard or we're not all pulling in the same direction, which can only be detrimental.

The needs of the many never outweigh the needs of the few...

I agree on compromising HC. I think the uni needs to keep positioning itself as an asset to all and not allow any town and gown divide.

For me it would be great to see the student village built in phases if that's possible, utilising existing purchased land first.

Scaffolding has been up since January - it's an HIMO but not specific to students. The project actually incorporates three buildings: this one, Goldfactors and the old arcade next door - they've all been knocked through and the old arcade given a new shop front, although no new shop is expected to open any time soon.

Just wish they would do something about The Crown. Bits of it are hanging off...
