Baku. Ramil Mammadli – APA. Spokesman for Defense Ministry, Lieutenant-General Eldar Sabiroglu held a press conference on the outcomes of the year, APA reports.
Sabiroglu said Azerbaijani Army had had a lot of achievements, exercises had been held on the level of all army units to increase the proficiency. He said new decisions had been passed on the activity of the army at the recent board meeting of the Defense Ministry. Touching on the Defense Ministry’s relations with the international organizations, the spokesman said the cooperation was effective for the Azerbaijani Army.
“The ministry is cooperating with NATO within the framework the Partnership for Peace program. We have said several times that the Defense Ministry’s cooperation with NATO is developing. Relations are established basing on the agreements on cooperation signed with a number of countries. 170 events will be held according to the recent agreement signed with NATO. 119 of them will be held by the Defense Ministry,” he said.
Eldar Sabiroglu said alongside with achievements there had been sorrowful events in Azerbaijani Army. The spokesman said the recent statement made by President Ilham Aliyev made Armenia anxious.
“After that Armenian parliamentarians appealed to the international organizations. Armenia’s military position is not as previous, so that it can gain something if the war starts. We have statistical data that Armenian Defense Ministry fails to form several military units. There are hundreds of dead villages in Armenia. Armenian government also confesses it. A million and a half people have left Armenia within 20 years. All this is attributed to the war. It would be better if this problem is solved peacefully, because it will not be the same, if the war starts. Its flames will burn many places. Azerbaijan’s all military potential has been mobilized to liberate the lands,” he said.

The Azerbaijani Land Forces number 85,000 strong, according to UK Advanced Research and Assessment Group estimates. The 2,500 men of the National Guard are also part of the ground forces. In addition, there are 300,000 former service personnel who have had military service in the last fifteen years. Other paramilitary agencies consist of Interior Ministry Internal Troops of Azerbaijan, 12,000 strong, and the land component of the State Border Service, 5,000 strong.
Azerbaijan has signed numerous contracts to strengthen its armed forces and to train its military with Turkey's assistance. Azerbaijan has also implemented a new organizational style in order to modernize its army. Over the last 15 years, Azerbaijan has been preparing its military for possible action against Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh. It is feared that Azerbaijan may attempt to retake Karabakh and the surrounding regions by military force because the last negotiations in France were a failure. Azerbaijan has continually stated that it is interested in a diplomatic and peaceful solution.
