  • This could comprise anything from schools, office buildings, museums, restaurants, public art, city landscapes or parks.
  • This should show modern buildings, structure and designs with a WOW factor. No "artist impression" demos just photo's of good quality.

Biovac Vaccine Laboratory In Ndabeni, Cape Town

The Biovac vaccine laboratory in Ndabeni, Cape Town, is a place of serious science, but also of innovation and invention. The brief calls for a lab block with a small office component taking advantage of views west. The clinical QC laboratory has to comply with stringent international standards to accredit Biovac the right to manufacture and test Vaccines in SA. This marries my two interest'; science and archeture.

Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre - Mapungubwe - South Africa
World Building of the Year 2010

Mapungubwe, located on South Africa's northern border with Botswana and Zimbabwe, prospered between 1200 and 1300 AD by being one of the first places that produced gold, but after its fall it remained uninhabited for over 700 years, until it's discovery in 1933. The society living in what today is Unesco World Heritage Site, is thought to have been the most complex in the region, implementing the first class-based social system in southern Africa. And besides the cultural heritage, Mapungubwe is also home to an immensely rich flora and fauna, including over 1000 years old Baobab trees and a big variety of animal life, including elephant, giraffe, white rhino, antelopes and 400 bird species.

Terra Cotta-Colored High School in Senegal

Despite soaring summertime temperatures in Senegal, the gorgeous terracotta-colored Jean Mermoz High School only relies on mechanical air-conditioning two months out of the year. The Architect leaned on the expertise of local craftsmen to realize this striking contemporary design, which has a remarkably small energy load thanks to a series of passive design strategies .

Freedom Park: South Africa (Part 1)
A 52-hectar park which uses architecture to unite South Africans

  • The Freedom Park is located on Salvokop, situated to the south of the Pretoria CBD, between Nelson Mandela Drive – a major gateway to the city from the South. In full view of the Union Buildings and in close proximity to Unisa and the Voortrekker Monument, The Freedom Park is emerging as a major landmark reshaping and enhancing the skyline of SA’s capital city.
[*]The Freedom Park is a people’s shrine that weaves the story of the events that shaped South Africa to what it is today. It is a reflection of the sacrificial achievements in South Africa. It is intended as a symbol of South Africa’s broken shackles and the hard earned freedom that was a dream for so many for decades.
[*]As time goes by, the Park will play a primary role in healing the nation’s wounds by uniting the diverse people of South Africa towards reconciliation and nation building.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: The Royal Netherlands Embassy

The Royal Netherlands Embassy complex lies amidst the urban sprawl on the southern outskirts of Addis Ababa, occupying a five-hectare steeply sloping site, enclosed within a dense eucalyptus grove. The guiding principle of this architectural collaboration between Ethiopian and Dutch designers was to preserve and respect the topography of the surrounding landscape while addressing the functional requirements of a working embassy. They took care to maintain existing contour lines and leave the vegetation and wildlife undisturbed.

Sipopo Congress Center: Malabo, Equatorial Guinea

In the Capital city Malabo of Equatorial Guinea, the SIPOPO Congress Center is situated by the ocean and surrounded by the woods. The rectangular two-storey block is nested in a semi-transparent metal envelop as a shield protecting from strong lights and create an implication of security, protecting the interiors from sharp sun beams yet benefiting the daylight at optimum.

The rectangular two-storey block is nested in a semi-transparent metal envelop as a shield protecting from strong lights and create an implication of security, protecting the interiors from sharp sun beams yet benefiting the daylight at optimum. The lacy texture of the mesh behaves like sun-break and grants a shady interior without hindering the accent of transparency. The building with its elegant veil visually merges to the ocean and the surrounding greenery in serenity, reflecting the beauty of the surroundings.
