The Mall will be located on a desert-like area on one of the main axis of the city, which connects the city center to the airport. The building program was basically including a shopping mall and a convention center. Considering the context, and the climatic inputs of the area; The design idea is based on dissolving the building program to create a cultural and commercial district out of it, which will influence its surrounding.

The designed complex includes an open shopping area, a convention center, supporting commercial units like a bank, a supermarket, a restaurant, coffee shops, a kid center, a pray area, open recreational spaces and a high-rise building of office-residential units.

Derived by the main design idea and the local climatic inputs of the area; The plan organization is based on the composition of different functions (shopping, culture, recreation, accommodation) , their open spaces-courtyards and the varying relations in between them. As the climatic values are available, all the circulation and the meeting areas are designed to be open spaces. The urban spaces integrated to the complex will house many activities and enrich the cultural interaction in the area. Instead of acting like a detached closed building, the designed settlement will support the street life in the whole area.

Moreover; the layout design of the complex, the orientation of the buildings, and the facade organizations are also structured and detailed to generate and support the most effective use of the natural sources like sun-light, wind and rain. The buildings are positioned parallel to west to shadow the open spaces. The parallel positioning of the commercial blocks provides a wind corridor and supports continuous natural ventilation and passive cooling.

The shadow of the hotel block covers the recreational open area and pool at midday. Sunlight control is also supported with the partial shadings. The second facade covering the west front of the shopping block provides a buffer zone to prevent the heating of the facade. The air also circulates through the air vents provided by two sided coffee shops at the ground floor. The green roof is also used to block the sunlight.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:

The concept studies of the project are completed in February 2014. the realization of the project is expected to be finished in 2 years. The project is designed for Mogadishu.

This is exactly the kind of place I would love to shoot a tv-show in the future. A Somali version of Friends or Fresh Prince.

The Jazeera Estate & this project will create new economic zones away from the traditional hubs downtown. The whole area close the airport will soon become the place to be in a reconstructed booming Mogadishu.

I hope this comes to fruition. Hector, please do go back and make a Somali version of friends. People take the entertainment industry for granted but it really does matter. This is one of the reasons most people keep their culture and language. You will never find an Indian kid who doesn't know their language.

Wrong i know multiple Indian kids who don't know their language, tv shows do play a factor though I can't deny that. Teaching the language is mostly in the hands of the parents, lakiin let's stay on topic.

I certainly welcome the development. When I first looked at it I though: "wow, this will be a striking/unusual building for Mogadishu".

But then looking at the pictures for a while longer, I'm not convinced that the building design makes the best use of the available space, a lot of which seems to be wasted/unused because of numerous unnecessary pedestrian walkways/underpasses/overpasses. Other than the tower, I think that the of the building is quite dull and uninspiring and the colour scheme is bland, though at least it is in keeping with the whitewashed old Mogadishu.

But having said that, there is a need for quality retail/leisure space in the city and this project will go some way to meeting that need and will also create a lot of jobs, both temporary and long term. Onwards and upwards! :eek:kay:

This is the architect's reasoning:

Instead of acting like a detached closed building, the designed settlement will support the street life in the whole area. Moreover; the layout design of the complex, the orientation of the buildings, and the façade organizations are also structured and detailed to generate and support the most effective use of the natural sources like sun-light, wind and rain. Lol, I was waiting for this. Everyone is intitled to their opinion, I just don't agree with those of you that always criticise the architecture of every building... I don't know if this is a skyscraper thing or your all architects but I simply don't see what your saying. To me almost every building looks nice and the only thing I would complain about would be the colours.

Don't get me wrong Somalia64, I welcome the project and I can see both the value that it generates and the need for it, but I just think that the design results in a strange/wasteful use of the available space, especially considering that there is very little high-quality retail/leisure space in the city.

A lot of space has been wasted. Even if they had kept the same design but just added 2 additional floors to the lower floors, that would have created a much more functional building with a lot more space for shopping/leisure facilities.

You've got a point there; they also didn't seem to take the two rainy seasons into consideration when designing this

They say it will be constructed on the main axis that connects the city-center with the airport. Isn't Jasira further away?

They're most likely unsure of the feasibility of the mall if they were to have 2 or 3 more floors, it would be taking a high risk. But if business does go well, they most likely would add another 2-3 floors or whatever is needed. Who know how many units will be sold or rented when considering a somewhat ripe market as Somalia is.
