Enhancing Muar’s scenic riverfront

MUAR: A stretch of Jalan Maharani here will be turned into a beautifully landscaped riverfront walkway with recreational park by August next year.

Muar municipal council president Dr Sa’ari Mohd Nooh said the RM2.1mil project had started early this month and urged local residents to be patient with the construction works.

He said the riverfront between the town bridge and the new Mara complex near the Harbour Master’s office would have some heavy construction activities soon.

“The state government first planned to turn Jalan Abdullah into a pedestrian walkway about five years ago but scrapped it later due to several problems.

“It then looked at Jalan Maharani which is located along Sungai Muar and decided to turn the road into the Maharani Walk,” he told reporters at his office last week.

Dr Sa’ari said the National Landscape Department then carried out studies on the project and in 2003 submitted a design to the state government for approval.

He said the design covered the whole stretch of Jalan Maharani up to Jalan Othman near the Muar police station and would come to a total of over RM11mil.

However, due to limited funds, he said the department decided to develop a stretch of the road near the town bridge as its first phase before extending it up to Jalan Othman.

Besides beautifying the stretch of Jalan Maharani and a recreational park, he said the project also included fountains, a pavilion, an esplanade along the riverbank and an information booth.

Dr Sa'ari said the booth would provide information and location of governmentoffices, shopping areas, historical sites and popular eateries.

“We have Sungai Muar passing by the town and we want to capitalise on its beauty as well as make the town more attractive to visitors.

“The park will be ideal for local residentswho want to spend qua-lity time with their families and for Tai-Chi sessions ,” he added.

Cleaning of Muar estuary
Friday December 15, 2006
By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH

MUAR: The Pioneer Technology Sdn Bhd electronic company at Tanjung Agas here has become a pioneer firm in the district to undertake a river-cleaning project.

The company, along with Southern Waste Management, Muar Golf Club and the municipal council pooled their resources to remove garbage and floating debris at the Muar River estuary recently.

The three-hour river cleaning operation involved more than 300 people; with Pioneer Technology contributing 200 of the workers.

Council president Dr Sa’ari Mohd Nooh said it was the first time a giant electronic company in Muar carried out a river cleaning project.

He said Pioneer Technology, which led the operation, managed to engage Southern Waste Management and Muar Golf Club in the project.

Speaking to participants of the project near Tanjung Emas here, he said the council was grateful to all parties for their commitment in wanting to clean Sungai Muar.

He said the river, which stretched to Negri Sembilan before joining a tributary of Sungai Pahang, was a popular waterway for traders during the 16th and 17th centuries.

“However, the river's popularity dropped with the opening of new settlements along coastal areas and the coming of bigger vessels trading in the region.

“Over the years, uncontrolled developments in the hinterland has caused pollution of the river,” he said.

Earlier, Pioneer Technology director Shigeyoshi Okubo said the project was undertaken to support the Government’s call to maintain and preserve natural resources.

He said the project marked the company’s commitment to environment-related programmes and more activities would be carried out the around Tanjung Emas area soon.

“We hope members of the public as well as visitors to Tanjung Emas will help preserve the idyllic beauty of the environment by maintaining cleanliness in the area,” he added.

Hotel and commercial complex for Muar
Saturday December 16, 2006

View of the Muar Traders' Hotel next to the new
Muar Pekan Rabu Complex along Sungai Muar.

MUAR: The tallest building here, which used to belong to and also housed the Pagoh Umno division office, will soon become a popular commercial and hotel complex.

The 11-storey building, built when former Johor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Othman Saat was the division’s chief, has been bought over by a company and has been renamed Muar Trade Centre.

The complex had been renovated and redesigned, turning the six upper floors into a hotel and the lower floors for commercial use, said Muar Trade Centre director K.C Lim.

He said the hotel, called the Muar Traders’ Hotel, provided 66 spacious standard rooms and deluxe rooms, besides 16 executive apartments.

He said the hotel, located between the District Office building and the Muar Pekan Rabu complex along Sungai Muar, offered a panoramic view of the waterway, including the estuary.

He said the hotel, managed by Actitage Sdn Bhd, was not aimed at competing with other hotels in the town but to provide visitors, especially those from outside the district, with more choices of accommodation, adding that it was also a preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

Lim said the five lower floors would not only house shops and restaurants, there would also be offices, adding that, the complex would be a new commercial landmark for the town.

He said there would be a banquet hall catering for up to 600 guests on the second floor and an exhibition centre on the third floor.

Those who want to know more about the Muar Traders’ Hotel or the centre can visit the website at www.muartadershotel.com or call 06-9538100 or 06-9539100.
