A four-part series of pictures from my recent trip to Atlanta. Enjoy. :)

Georgia State Capitol was completed in 1889.

It remains an important architectural and historic landmark.

Bank of America Plaza (tallest in Atlanta and the southern USA) and the BellSouth Building.

Zooming in on the top. The building itself is 1,023 ft. (312 m.) tall and was completed in
1992.

Here it is again behind Emory Crawford Long Hospital.

Marriott Marquis Hotel (the white building) and SunTrust Plaza (second tallest in Atlanta) in
the background.

Zooming in on the top of the SunTrust Plaza.

191 Peachtree Tower and Westin Peachtree Plaza (fourth and fifth tallest).

First Congregational Church in front of the two 'scrapers.

Atlanta Hard Rock Cafe.

The skyline of downtown Atlanta.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born and grew up in Atlanta. Now he rests in his tomb placed in the
middle of a pool in his old neighborhood Sweet Auburn.

He used to pastor at this church, the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Later, a new one bearing the same name was built right across the historic one.

King was born in this house, which is now a national, historic site.

In 1996 Atlanta hosted the Centennial Olympic Games. The park next to the CNN Center is called
Centennial Park.

The Omni Hotel to the left.

A panorama of the downtown Atlanta skyline.

CNN have their headquarters in Atlanta. It's called the CNN Center.

The Sacred Heart Church.

Atlanta City Hall was completed in 1930. It is a fine example of a Neo-Gothic government
building.

Very nice photos. I rarely see City Hall photographed (even though it's one of the coolest buildings) and Ebenezer Baptist Church. Thanks!!!
Excellent photography, with beautiful vivid colors :eek:kay: Atlanta's skyline always offers great opportunity for nice pics. Thanks for sharing your work with us.

Some miles east of Atlanta lies Stone Mountain. It is said to be the largest block of exposed
granite in the world.

The mountainside contains a huge carving of three important people from the Confederacy,
namely Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas
"Stonewall" Jackson. The carving measures 190 by 90 ft. (58 x 27 m.), so the height is
about the same as a nine-story building.

Stone Mountain Lake.

From the Skyride Plaza you can take a tram to the top of the mountain.

From the top you can see the skyline of Atlanta in the distance.

A few trees even manage to grow on this bare rock.

I wonder what famous beverage company has its headquarters in Atlanta?

The public transportation system in Atlanta is called Marta (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit
Authority). They operate both the buses and the metro.

The Atlanta metro is regarded as one of the safest in the nation.

Atlanta's got several skylines. One of them is in Midtown.

1180 Peachtree.

Here is One Atlantic Center (third tallest in Atlanta), GLG Grand, and Promenade II.

Promenade II.

Promenade II again and 1180 Peachtree.

Philips Arena in downtown is home to the Atlanta Hawks NBA basketball team and the Atlanta
Thrashers NHL hockey team. The capacity of the arena is just above 18,750 for hockey or
basketball games. The Westin Peachtree Plaza is seen to the right.

The Georgia Dome is home to the Atlanta Falcons NFL football team.
The dome's permanent seating capacity is 71,250.

A sculpture between the two arenas.

Philips Arena to the left and the Georgia Dome in the background.

Underground Atlanta is an underground mall where a railroad used to be.

Super shots!

One correction....the subway or "Metro" portion of MARTA was up and running many years prior to the Olympics. I believe the first trains began running around 1979 or 1980.
I love the way you include a bit of info about what we're seeing. BTW I'm enjoying your Denver thread as well ( one of my favorite cities).

Thanks! Yes, you're right. It was only the North line which was completed just before the Games.

@gwiATLeman: Thanks! I'm happy you like the Denver thread too!

Sorry to belabor the point, but....

The North Line had also been up and running for quite a few years prior to the Olympics.

I believe you might be referring to the two northern-most stations at the end of the North Line. As I recall, these stations were opened shortly before the start of the Olympic Games.
