My proposal for a New Nigeria

I am of the opinion that there is no way that a nation called Nigeria can achieve greatness. That a nation with this title attached to ever thing that it strives for can ever be considered an exemplary nation. This name Nigeria, in my opinion, is just a relic from the country's colonial past. It does show the unity of all the cultures which represent this great nation. it has been soiled and destroyed by many years of corruption, crude and shanty cities, mismanagement of assets, poverty, violence, religious unrest, crime, internet scams and over all wrong doing. This name Nigeria is now so bad that it is synonymous with anything wrong which can happen to a country ranging from poor human rights records, to high corruption rates, to slaughter of innocent people all the way en masses shanty towns as excuses for cities. :bash::bash::bash:

In my opinion, the root of all Nigeria's problems is the name NIGERIA and everything associated with it from it's disgustingly bland tricolor (or should i say bicolor)flag to it's currency the Naira, the official currency for money laundering and bribery and corruption.

I stand here now today to a proposal for a new identity for my country. A new entity which is fully able to capture it's wide and varied history. one which fully represents all the people and cultures of the nation and one which can be uttered with nothing but pride.
This new identity should be 'ATLANTICA' and a new flag and accessories would follow the new name.

A country's name is more than just it's title, a country's name should represent the greatness of that country and in my opinion changing Nigeria's name is the first step to changing the country!

baaah, very harsh and partly untrue words but name change won´t change a thing, that´s not the problem and this should be the least on our mind to change!

The house will stay the same house whether its facade is painted in yellow or green!

Well think about it. How long do you think we would be able to invite investors over to Nigeria with accusations of bribery, violence, religious and political unrest hanging over our heads. Just the name of that country evokes all these subjects. Take a survey of 5 randomers and ask them what the name Nigeria implies and jot down the result, trust me it would startle you.

Of course, name change alone would do squat, however, it should be the first step. It should be followed by a total re branding so to speak, with every thing from the flag or the country to it's telephone ch\ode changed; almost like the emergence of a totally new country. more importantly, the Nigerian constitution must be changed too, the police force, education system, health care, every single thing associated with Nigeria would changed.

Now when all these aspects of modern day Nigeria are changed for the better, it would be like a newly developed country just sprung up in Africa. A new frontier, fresh for investors, tourists etc.

Why not lets call it West Africa? Like South Africa. Lol
:hilarious:rofl:

Btw Nigeria sounds better than "Benue Coast"
Well its not about sounding better its about it being better. For too many years Nigeria has been the subject of ridicule. That great country has been and will always be deprived of greatness because of the curse that is it's name.
I think the root of all Nigeria’s problems is the contrasting cultures within its borders. I do believe there is a cure for Nigeria, but this cure entail a lot of luck.

I say…don’t hold your breath.

If you dislike it so much, why do you have it as your avatar?

Regardless of my dislike for it, I am still very proud of it.:banana:

I mean it's like you having a brother or relative who really irritates or embarrass you however, you are proud and glad you have them in your family.
I feel your passion for change, and empathise with you.
I can remember how people detested the name 'South Africa' as well, because of its racist background. The PAC actually refer to the country as 'Azania', which is a watered down version of 'Tanzania'. Fortunately, No one bit on that one. Some intellectuals would still actually prefer a name change, because the country's name is more a geograhical term. Also with the negative images that the name 'Africa' conjures, many people dont differentiate between SA & the rest of Africa. So, what's happening in Zimbabwe or Kenya, people assume that is what SA is all about.
Funny, I thought about 'Atlantia' or 'New Southland'

Nigeria needs to keep its name. What you're trying to do is change the name because you're worried about how others see the country and its people. I think we need to start discussing genuine ways to solve some of Nigeria's problems and not thinking about changing the name and flag.

I've always said Nigeria and Africa's problem is education, when I say education and don't mean just 1+1=2 type education I mean proper orientation. For example I don't think they do enough to teach children about Nigeria's history, laws and citizen's rights. Just the other day I asked my cousin to name the first military head of state of Nigeria and he drew a blank and this is someone that graduated from high school with good marks and currently has a 3.9 gpa in college. I say that to say this: we have to start taking pride in our countries and this can only be done when people have proper knowledge of the country. With knowledge it becomes pride and with pride there's natural love and with that love Nigeria will start developing because people will want to make the country better.

I Don't think thats it. When I was schooling in Ibadan, half of what we learned was on Nigerian Politics and History.

You Cannot say that the education isn't there, whether the schools are inadequate or not etc etc. I think the main issue with the educations is realizing the problems that exist in the country and how to go about them.

If the education was not at a decent level, Nigerians wouldn't be in high places in most known countries on earth. You wouldn't have one of the largest Brain drains on earth.

You don't understand what I'm saying. Students are taught about Nigeria but they aren't taught to love it. Besides, I'm talking about the younger generation it's getting really bad out there. Nigerians go to other countries and behave because they know the laws in those countries they live in will be quick to send them back if they misbehave but in Nigeria it's a different story, its like everybody wants to be a chief, everybody feels like they're above the law so they don't act with that same manner they do in foreign countries. Finally, if these Nigerian leaders loved Nigeria they wouldn't be as corrupt as they are.

But that is what is important about it. It's how people perceive you that you can tell who you truly are.

No, just my own suggestions :)
do u really think changing the name and the flag will will make nigeria better. its like changing the name of lagos to new lagos it would still have slums and poverty.
Changing the name is not the first step. Changing the way things are run in the nation and see what the world thinks about the new change before going about the name change should come first.

Nation eluded with corruption and mismanagement. It has forced many of its citizen into the world as paupers as well as grazers of greener pasture. The government needs to start looking at the reason why this individuals that would have be more than useful to country are leaving for other nations in pains. Total cleansing, from the presidency to the local government offices, from school to home and instill in the citizens the moral upbringing and that involvement in crimes is a bad thing.Even when these moral standards are upheld some are bound to break them and in such case those should be publicly punished - be it the so called godfathers or the ordinary man on the street.-then, things will start to take its proper places.

Divisions between the three ethnic tribes of Yorube, Hausa and Ibo have to be broken and they have to come into term as one people with the national interest at heart. Religion and tribalism have to be thrown out of the national issues, again, the nation will start to move forward.

Education, not only in reading and writing, that defines the academic side of it but the need to know that civilization more or less civility can bring better to people and the nation. They have to organiz themselves in all areas of endevour, taking the responsibility to stand for what is right and reach out for those who lack.

These little steps can position Nigeria on the rightful path. Before you know it the name becomes synanimous with things good.
